260 Remington / Barrel Life??

Looking for thoughts on barrel life for the 260 Remington. I'm going to rebarrel my M70 .308 Winchester XTC rifle and I'm looking to make the best choice for barrel life in the 6mm or 6.5mm calibers. Any help from the experts on this great forum would be appreciated.

I had an AR10 XTC rifle in 260, the barrel had about 3100 rounds through it when I took it off. Shooting 120's and 140's with H4350. I've had high masters say they have pulled them as low as 2200 or so. I think 260 is a good "no hassle" choice for an M70.

I set 2 260 Rem barrels back at 2500 rd. I got 3600 rds out of both barrels before they were shot out. My criteria for a shot-out barrel is a 10 shot group at 100 yds greater than .59 in.

Have you looked at Hornady's 6.5 Creedmoor? Same ballistically as the .260 and is supposed to give a little longer barrel life due to the shoulder and neck. Hasn't been out too long so I haven't heard of anyone shooting one out yet to get a definate report. Uses 120 and 140 AMAX bullets and H4350. I'm reloading for mine now and have no problems getting 2870fps from the 140s. Also factory ammo out there for $24/20 and it's pretty accurate also. Just something to think about.

I pulled mine off at 3200. Most of the wear was in the throat. Had it set back 1/2" and reamed to 6.5x284. Works really well.

Good choice and barrel life is on par with a 6BR or better.

As for the Creedmoor, with its choice of brass, I can't say I'd bother. 6.5X47 is so close and has so much going for it.

What do you mean by "slow fire"? Like 2 or 3 shots then let the barrel cool?

I assume that is correct.. it's been found that barrel life last longer when you shoot and let them cool instead of blowing round after round and a hot barrel where you can't even touch it... physical behind it is the metal in the throat gets so hot it gets softer.. thus wearing faster... that's what I've got out of it all..

Well since I dont do comps I should be good. I normally only take 2 or 3 shots then lay the gun out of the sun with the bolt open to cool

when a X course shooter says slow fire means two sighters and 20 shots in 22 min.
