260 Remington Barrel Length

My first post here, let me start by saying hello ya'll. 1st question. I've read the 260 remington will outperform the 308. I'm trying to put together a sniper style rifle for a sniper competition next year. The yardage will be out to 1000. I'm stongly leaning toward the 260 Rem. What is the minimum barrel length needed to achieve 1000 yards with good knockdown power since we'll be knocking over steel siloettes? I'd like to build a 22" since I'll be shooting with a silencer, lenght issue) but just have no idea its velocity. Anyone have experience here with a 22"?

Are there any better options out there other than the 260 Rem in a short action repeater? What about knock down power for deer, since this will be my hunting rifle too..maybe.) I have Lapua 308 brass already. Anyone foresee any good companies making good brass..other than remington?

Thanks,

The 6.5x47L is approx the same as the 260 and it gets used a lot in repeaters. It has the advantage of Lapua brass and uses a 308W bolt face so its easy to pick actions to suit.

It might be worth considering before deciding on the 260 but both would be good for what you want. Keep in mind that RL17 has shown big increases in velocity for the 6.5x47L with the 130-142gr heavy projectiles. That might help if you need the knock down of a 142gr bullet.

I have a 24" 260 with a rock 1x8 barrel. With a 139 Lapua or 140 berger vld I easly reach 2750 fps with 1/2 moa or better accuracy. I am only guessing butI don't think you would lose much speed with a 22" barrel. You might try Snipershide as several guys there shoot them how you are describing. Quality lapua brass is a desirable feature and should be a consideration. Making 260 cases from 243 lapua requires neck turning. The 308 is a better idea I think. My 308 lapua brass is not here yet. Remington brass has been good as far as consistent weights but neck thickness could be a little better. I have several reloadings on my remmington brass with only recent problems with loose primer pockets.,6-10 loads) My friend uses a 6.5x47 and so far the results have not meet expectations, but it does show a lot of promise.

Bucko:

Here's an article for you to read...if you haven't already done so. Terry cross has used this rifle to take first place in many sniper shoots.

I'm building my rifle using this round...but, I'm going with a 31" tube for 1000 yard BR shooting.

Good luck with your project....I think the 6.5mm projo holds a lot of promise for long range shooting...which ever variant you go with.

I think Rhino just has a thing for the BLONDIE'S:crazy: Swedes but he'll come around to the Redheads :D eventually

22" or 24" will do everything you indicated. Those long barrels can be muzzle heavy if you have to shoot standing and awkward to move around with the rifle much.

I love blondes, dark haired Italians, asians...hummm...as long as they ain't too bitchy, I like'em all as long as they got them curves and ain't too skiny!

RHINOUT!

i meant swede as in swedish mauser 6.5x55. rhino's all time favorite .....he sure mentions that 6.5x55 any time someone is looking for a 6.5 caliber, no doubt trying to get that revolution started.:):) cliffe
