I have a lot of experience with the .260 Rem, shooting it for 3 years before focusing on the 6BR. Part of the challenge is the brass. Here in the US you buy Remington stamp brass, or take .243 and Neck-up. I had good luck with both Lapua and Norma .243 necking up. Both we're very accurate. However, with a standard factory chamber I ran into doughnut problems very quickly. This required that I ream inside and neck-turn outside. I think the best solution is to run the cases through a Full-length die after necking up, then inside ream.

This is why I'd advocate a 260AI chamber, or at least a minimum spec std 260 chamber. You won't get this with any of the factory guns mentioned. The Remington will probably be the easiest for smiths to work on, but I really like Sako Actions. I think if you put a custom barrel on a Sako or Remington, that would be a really nice gun.

There has been a lot of people working with the 260 here in the states, primarily as a long-range target round. One load that seems to work for most everybody is the Lapua 123gr Scenar pushed by Hodgdon H4350,About 43.0 grains typically). H4350 is made in Australia and may go by a different name in Tazzy. The magic number is around 2950 FPS. That's usually an accurate node, with very good ballistics.

With the 260AI chambering, the case shape is more stable. Again, if you don't mind neck-turning, that's the way I'd go. The 260 AI has enough extra horsepower that you can get 2900+ in a 26-27" barrel with the 139 Scenar or 142gr Sierra MK. Personally I favor the Scenar, but the latest lots of 142 SMKs are reportedly very good.

There are a couple threads on www.snipershide.com running right now on the .260. You'll find useful information there. In a couple weeks or so, 6mmBR.com will be doing a lengthy story with Terry Cross about the .260 and .260AI. Terry is a respected gunsmith who has won many major matches using these two cartridges. He favors the AI version for the extra V and better case stability,i.e. less doughnut problems, less need to bump the cases.)

Hope this helps. BTW, if you're near Hobart say hello to my old friend Kate who runs the "BREAD" bakery shop with her husband Lee.

I have experience with both the .260, and .260 A.I. shooting f-class, my .260 Rem. shot great at 2700 fps with H4350 and 142 SMK, the .260 A.I. shoots the best at around 2850 with 142 SMK, and H4350. The .260 A.I. can be pushed to app. 2900-2925, but you kill the brass when it is hot outside. With the 260 A.I. I placed 6th at the f-class nationals last year, it stayed with the 6 BR's at 600, and the 6.5x284's at 1000

Anyone out there try using 7mm/08 Winchester case instead of the 243 or 308 case? I don't get the dreaded donut with them at all. The Palma guys sure seem to like Winchester, I saw a pole over on long-range.com and Winchester brass was voted #1 for Palma by a pretty large margin. I get around 4 to 5 loadings in my T2K before the primer pocket opens up in them.

Thank mates for the valuable inputs. Here in Tassi the 7.08 rem is more popular than the 260 and in Oz people go for the 270 or the 6.5.55 I have one Carl Gustav 6.5.55 but I am worried that because is old it may not handle hot handloads.

The remington importers have only one mountain rifle in stock, and is only one Ruger available. i can not understand why the 243 is more popular than the 260.

cheers

Of the 3 manufacturers you mention I would recommend the new Sako without reservation.:thumb: I have witnessed a Model 75 Stainless Varmiter, in 243, shoot five and ten-shot clover leaf groups all day. So impressed was I at this "out-of-the-box" performance it made me wonder just why anyone,my self very much included!) would spend £5000 on a custom rig with no guarantee it will perform any better.
