.260 Rem Improved

Would like to hear member's experience with an improved version of the .260 using Lapua brass vs the 6.5x47 and Creedmore. Thanks
Bill

sorry I can not comment on competitive use, I had one built by for a hunting rifle, it was a flop, very little velocity gain, accuracy was not up to par, and I dumped it. 1/2-5/8" groups ok but not what I like to have.

Bob

I was mainly thinking of the improved version to limit case lengthening and possibly throat erosion. It does have a 20 degree shoulder, doesn't it? Realize velocity gain is only 50fps or so. I would think you could get 2900 with 140's and a 30" target barrel with good life. Also, Lapua makes .260 brass and if you really wanted to push it, you could make brass from the .308 Palma brass with the small primer. Just something to think about. Bill

I pushed the 140s over 3100 in a 30" barrel with a 260AI. Its a good round, and would be even better with the 308 palma brass. The 6.5 rsaum is interesting as well.

Shooting steel and some target work out to 1000. Possibly, F-Class if I can get the required accuracy.

Bill,

my experience was 50fps gain in a 24" Hart on a trued 700, took the bbl off and replaced it with a 7-08AI chamber 24in #3 Hart bbl and got into the .300's with hunting bullets, gain was into the 3025 fps sweet spot with 140 Nosler bt and Sierra sbt's - rig weights 7 1/4 with scope. - it would exceed 3100 but not as accurate in my rig. longer bbl would make another fps gain possible.

I would go the 7-08ai for your purposes -I got just under 8% increase water vol.

Bob

The 7-08AI had occurred to me since it is such an outstanding combo. Wonder how it would handle a 180 Berger seated to the base of the neck in a long throated rifle with a 30" barrel?
Was loading some hunting rounds this weekend for my 6.5x55 and it occurred to me that it would be an ideal
6.5 for my purposes. Wonder why it is not used more often? I get about 3000 from a 24" tube using 120 Nosler BT and Barnes TTSX. Bill

Bill, I have not gone above the 160gr in my testin, and they were hunting bullets. however through the std length mag limit loading I was limited as to the bullet back into the chamber area of the case. they shot well, however in my situation the 150's were a better choice and gave 2890fps in the sweet spot.
the long throat and longer bbl would be the trick in my opinion for you intended use

Thanks Bob. I am not limited by action length and will shoot single shot. Hence, OAL of bullet can be long.

Just saw this-

I have built 3. My current rifle is a rechamber from 260 Remington and a 20" barrel. I gained 125 fps and accuracy improved from 1 MOA to about .6 MOA.

I can push 108 Lapuas to 3400 fps and 140s to 2875 with the 20" barrel. ES are down to about 10 and they were in the 30s before. What's not to like?

If using a long barrel (30") look into slower powders. Had success with the slower powders in the straight 260 and am working with them in my 260 Ackley. IMR 7977 is looking good in initial load work up with bullet heavier than the 140's

Good information!!!

I built one some years back for 1000 yard prone Matches.
It was a hammer >>> I used 243 win. brass back then. R-19 to fire form at 600 with 142 SMK.
After that H4831SC with 142SMK for 1000 Matches.

Bottom line a lot of work for that little more..
I now shoot a 6.5X55 Swede. I use Win. Brass and you don't have to open the bolt face.
I get more with less work .

Good Luck

My 260 Imp 30* reamer blows the body .068" forward and has the same body taper as the 260 AI. Can't compare velocities with a std 260 because I've never owned one, but accuracy with B140VLDs & IMR 4451 is excellent; avg vel is about 2840fps out of a 26" bbl. Perhaps I could load for more velocity, but the accuracy's good enough at 2840 to suit my needs, so I haven't tried to go any faster. Use it in a trued M700 w/PTG custom bolt, Krieger 1-8.5tw bbl, McM A5 stock, Kahles K624i/AMR in practical/tactical matches. Initially used WW 7-08 brass necked down, then WW 243 necked up - both shoot great. My reamer's neck dia is only .295", which is just what loaded Lapua 260 measures, so I have to neck turn the Lapua to use it. If Winchester-Western ever catches up with demand and their 243 & 7-08 brass becomes available again, I'll forgo the 'pleasure' of neck turning the Lapua and stick with the WW stuff.

I utilized Lapua .243 brass that I necked up to .260 and neck turned for my 260AI. I also deburred the flash holes, some say not necessary, but did so anyhow. This braas has shown very good consostancy out of my Rem. 700 mountain rifle for which I load 120 Nosler Ballistic Tips. This load is a true heavy hitter that has accounted for many deer, pronghorn antelope and a few African plains game animals. I would not hesitate to work these up. Good luck. MTG
