.260 Rem barrel...

I am building a .260Rem on a 700SA. My questions are 1) which barrel manufacturer would you choose? 2) what finished length to you recommend? 3) what is the ideal rate of twist for 140gr. bullets?

My hunting rifle is a Tikka 595 with a Pac-Nor 26 inch, Magnum Sporter countour Cr-Mo Steel barrel (0.650 inch dia. at the muzzle) with polygonal rifling and a 1 turn in 8 inches rate of twist.
The rifle has produced 1.5 inch 3-shot groups at 300 meters with Hornady 129 gr. SSTs and Nosler 130 gr. Accubond bullets. I have not shot 140 grain bullets through the barrel yet. Preferred powder is the maximum load listed in the maunuals with H4831 SC, using Lapua brass and Federal 210 M primers. Bullets seated +0.010" into the rifling.

Chronographed muzzle velocity averaged 2925 fps with SD = 7 fps.

I'll be taking it out for Coues deer this weekend in SE Arizona.

If you are looking for consistent accuracy I would run with any of the known premium barrel makers, Bartlein, Krieger, Hart, Broughton, Brux, Pac Nor, etc.

For twist rate anywhere in the 8" to 8.5" twist is good for the 139-142 bullets.

I have some 6.5 Bartlein barrels that might work for your build up. They are listed here:

Good luck

There are so many good barrel makers out there now, that I'd go with what the 'smith recommended. 8" twist is best for the heavier bullets, and my two 260's also shoot 100 Gr bullets very well with that twist. Barrel length depends on your purpose, but I wouldn't go shorter than 24" myself.

Just to throw another name into the mix: I've been using a #3 contour 4-groove Shilen with the 8" twist 'rachet' rifling - it broke in easily, easy cleaning (very little copper fouling) and seems to deliver good performance. 43.1gr of RL-17 with Sierra 120's (for hunting) in the mid 2900's and 1.5" groups @ 200 yds.
