260 barrel length

I have a Rem VLS barreled action that I want to cut back to either 20" or 22" and put in a shorted stock for my son. I was wanting opinions as I want to reduce the weight without hurting the velocity to much. Thanks, David

Need more info. Are you looking to stay with 6.5mm barrel? Are you looking to rechamber or just trim the tube down.

You may want to wait until until October. Lapua will be releasing something that might work real well for you.

If you reduce the weight, you will also increase the recoil force. I've actually seen some youngsters shoot 17-lb BR guns from the bench very well because they are stable and the recoil is lessened by all that weight.

I'm going to use the rifle as a starter deer rifle and don't want it to heavy. He is 12 and 5'tall. I don't think recoil will be a problem, he shoot a 20ga. 870 youth with no problem. I want to try the 120gr. bullets to start and didn't know if a 20" was to short. Thanks, David

HI
He's 12 and just about to start growing again.

I put on 50 lbs and over 4 inches in height between 12 and 13.5.

Leave it at 22 inches, less muzzle blast and better ballistics and really SFA extra weight.

I hope its a 1-8 twist then if your hacking the tube. You might find it won't stabilize the 140 gr bullets in a 1-9 at 20-22 inches..especially factory ammo.

Hunting rifles, I know from my swede like the 1-8 and you can shoot factory ammo with no problem. 1-9 HOWA I had didn't shoot the 140 gr factory pills well at all. I think it was a 22 inch barrel.
