260 and 7828SSC/140gr Amax

Has anyone tried 7828SSC with 140 class bullets in the 260? Doing some research for a friend. Right now he has IMR4350 on hand. Been tough getting him started with the carzy market. We where looking for domestic brass as this is a hunting/Steel plate rifle. The chance of loosing brass in the grass or snow are high. Only brass available is the Lapua at the moment.
I have some IMR7828 to loan him if it works as Quick Load shows but was hoping to get some real world experience with it. Can you help us out?
Thanks in advance.

You can make brass out of other calibers like 7-08,.243 necked up.And even .308 but you may have to neck turn.

Russ, I bought an 8lb jug of IMR7828SSC several months ago, thinking it'd probably be well-suited for use with heavies in both 284 & 280 AI. It does OK in those applications, but even where it produces good velocity, I'm not getting the accuracy with it that I get with H4831 or SC.

So, while I was doing the initial exploratory load development with my 1st 260 Imp 30*, I tried 7828SSC in it with several 140-class 6.5s. Got more-or-less the same results with it in this ctdg - OK velocities, but mostly mediocre accuracy. I was loading 46.5grs in formed cases, and all bullets used were either moly or HBN coated. Velocities out of a 26" Bartlein 1-8.5tw were all in the 2690-2720fps range. My notes don't show anything about pressure signs, so I can't comment on whether these were warm loads or not. Since I run AICS magazine DBM in this rifle, I didn't really want any more powder compression than I was getting at this charge weight, so I didn't try heavier charges.

Thanks fellas.
Here is what we got for him. A short action Remmy with trigger from Brownells, Tubb Recoil lug, A shilen Match barrel from Midway 1:8 twist Remington Varmint countour finish at 26 to 27". A used REmington Varmint stock with floor plate. Sihgtron SIII 6.5X24. His first non factory rifle. Chambered in 260. Somthing simple and easy for his first one.
I have some 4831Sc so maybe Ill send him home with some to see how it works. I have 8lbs of 7828SSC like you Dennis... Just have not used it for anything yet. Thought if it worked for the 260 he would be set for awhile.

I have a ton of 308 stuff. But he seemed OK with buying Lapua 260 after we talked about it. Like you I told him we could make 260 from some of my old 308 brass.

Thanks again fellas. Never owned a 260 so this all helps.

Russ, That's Dennis, not Denise....lol. The 260 Imp 30* was my 1st foray into working with the 260 - have built & shot several 6.5x47s & 6.5x55/6.5x55AIs for both XC & LR prone over the past few years, but wanted a 260 of one flavor or another for use in practical/tactical steel matches. Could've gone with the 260 AI, but didn't want any issues with smooth feeding out of magazines, so did the 30* shoulder version.

I had plenty of WW7mm-08 brass, so started out by necking that down, then tried necking-up WW243 after receiving a bunch of it that I'd had on backorder for almost a year. Both work great in my chamber, which has a .295" neck. I have to neck turn Lapua 260, as loaded round neck dia is also .295". Fireform loads use Ramshot Hunter with either Sierra or Lapua 123s, and accuracy with these at 2890fps is outstanding - I shoot FF loads in matches out to 800yds, and give up nothing where accuracy's concerned compared to ammo loaded in fully formed cases.

I've always liked N160 in my 6x47s and 6.5x55s, so naturally have been using it in this 260 Imp. Still doing load development with it in formed cases with the 123s, but had better initial accuracy with H4831SC & even N165 with 139-142gr bullets. Whatever - from what I read & hear, the 4350s are the powder of choice in the 260. I don't have any, and there's very little chance of getting into a supply of it anytime soon, so I'm using what I've got.

Good Lord... Sorry Brother. The better half is named Denise... Except its spelled all bass akwards.

Not enough coffee when i typed that in.

Rtheurer,
I was using necked down Lapua 308 brass and a CCI large rifle primer. i was getting 2750 fps. not 2850 like i said earlier.
