260 ACK & 284 Shehane Hydro-forming dies

Hey guys and gals, I have been getting enough request to hydro-form 260 ACK and 284 Shehane. The dies will be custom made and I require very tight inside neck plunger tolerances to achieve customer satisfied brass results to load and shoot a full load of your choice of powders.

These dies are proprietary dimension design and critical to inside neck clearance of less than .0005 in order to form the proper case in a custom chamber. I reamed a 260 ACK custom chamber cylinder today to get things started.

In order to obtain consistent brass case volume, it must be formed the same way every time ( one impact with over 50,000 PSI ).
Back to my question to those of you that are shooting these calibers. What brass do you prefer to use and what brass are you seeing the majority of the shooters use? What is the consistent neck thickness from a new lot of 284 brass currently averaging?

I am currently working with Lapua 260 brass (for 260 ACK) to work up the required impact plunger piston.
I am not sure how many shooters are sizing up from 6.5 284 Lapua or those that are using 284 Norma.

Please share your thoughts on the brass that will be or currently used.

I have been Hydro-forming for over 6 years and thank each of you that have used my services currently or in the past. You guys require consisted brass and that is the only thing I will provide.

Please advise accordingly and thank you in advance for your valued opinion.

Hey Darrell, it does not matter the cartridge, I ALWAYS turn my necks to 12 thousandths neck wall thickness. AND I would prefer to turn the necks PRIOR to forming, whether fireforming or Hydro.... I don't know if that would ill effect the Hydro die or not..

I also only use, Lapua 6.5x 284 norma for both of my 284 shehanes. Necks before turning were avg. .0149 on new cases.

I appreciate all your replies thus far. Need more input to determine what size piston to utilize with new brass to start with.

In order to blow out consistently, I have to have a good seal on the piston sleeve inner neck wall.

The plunger from my Hornady Shehane hydraulic form die measures 0.2515. Using Lapua 6.5x284 brass.

Outside diameter of expanded to 7mm non turned lapua 6.5x284 brass is 0.313 using a 0.2830 expander.

Average neck thickness is 0.015

I am currently working up the custom die for the 260 ACK.

All I need from you guys to get started is what brand brass are you using and what is the neck thickness?
I will make the die according to the information on neck thickness from an unaltered piece of brass. Check several for the average!

several of us in north Texas are using Alpha 260 brass, small primer pocket. it is very similar to Lapua

I checked a new box of blue box palma. 308 and it ranged from 14 to 15 thousands with the average about 14.6/1000.

lets get some other checks on this but this is how I read it. It seemed to have a good bit of variance in my brass which was a recent order from midway.

Turning necks before I hydro will not wok with the die design. Too many variables once they start getting turned to various neck thickness and will not seal inside pressure.

Darrell, that Alpha brass of mine that you looked at averages about .0145. I'm really liking it. Primer pockets are TIGHT! Good luck with the project

Ok guys and gals, I have my 260 ACK hydro die proto to my custom builder. Should be back and ready to go in a few weeks.

The 260 ACK custom specked hydro forming die will be shipped tomorrow. So I will be ready to form them starting Thursday. I already have several hundred here to complete Thursday and ship out.

If you need 708 ACK, I can form them from 260 ACK and neck up to 708 as well. These will set up the same length as a PTG Go gauge.

Please feel free to call me with any questions.
