257 Weatherby varmint loads

7mmmag

Gold $$ Contributor
I just got a 257 weatherby in a Rem 700 and was wanting to get loads for coyote's. I was thinking about 85 ballistic tip, 100 SMK. I never had one so any info would be appreciated. I would like to explode them like prarie dogs! Thanks

My .257Wby is for rockchucks. Any 100gr bullet doing 4000 will cause damage, but the SMK is a match bullet. It's accurate but not real explosive. The Sierra 100gr Spitzer BT is just as accurate in my gun and blows a rockchuck to pieces. It would be real effective on coyotes. A friend shot one coyote up the back end with a 100bal tip out of his 257Wby. Bullet hit the spine right between the shoulders......almost split that dog in two lengthwise.

We both shoot pretty much the same load....Reloder 22 with a 100gr bullet. Another good powder is IMR 4831. I won't list the charge because we've been accused of exaggerating and/or shooting dangerously hot loads. Neither is true, but it's not worth arguing with those who don't know.

The lastest issue of the Varmint Hunter mag (#72) has a nice article on the .257WM.George the author has taken over 400
head of game with his rifle and has some interesting insight on
the bullets he likes most in his rifle. While I don't own a .257WM
the article made me want one! :) Once deer and elk rifle season is over and its legal I'm going to load up some 110grn Sierra 270 bullets for my Weatherby and pursue

Thanks for the info. I also saw a 100 gr sreer hp. How fast can you shoot 85 BT with accuracy? It seems that the books are a little shy on what this will really do.

I always liked 100 grain Nosler BT's for doing both a varmint/deer cartridge, only thing is if the distance is less then a 100 yards on a deer it does have the tendancy to spoil a lot of meat. 75 grain V-max's are fun but if you push them too fast they come apart. The 85 grain ballistic Tips get going pretty good but i don't find them as accurate because you tend to have to jump them in a weatherby a bit more, in the remington that may not be a problem if it doesn't have the freebore that Weatherby uses.

i tryed the nosler 85gr BT but found they didnt expand reliably. dometimes theyd go clean through and other times theyd explode internally. i think youll be very impressed with speer TNT's. they are quite ummmmm "effective" :o

I just got some brass , I tried 80 ballistic tips in a 6mm and they did the exactly as you said . I am going to get some 87 soft points . How much should I reduce my load from the manuals because my rifle does'nt have any free-bore? I need some good loads Thanks!

start at the minimum load and work up keeping an eye out for pressure signs. my rifle has freebore so i wont quote loads but i use a warm load of australian AR2213sc. i bought a cheap rifle and wasted a lot of ammo trying to get it to shoot and eventually after 12months of playing with loads and bullets and two bedding jobs i found the locking lugs were not bearing evenly.

i now use nozler 115gr bt for fallow deer and speer TNTs for anything else. you gota try the 87gr TNT HP trust me! ;D

Thanks , how fast are you shooting the 87 TNT . I did'nt know if they would handle the velocity.
