Since they both have been available for awhile, is there a marked preference for a two lug or three lug ??

About to grab one and obviously haven't decided.. From my BR days think I would prefer RBLP.. Still have a new Jewell BR to use..

Any observations would be appreciated !!

Seems I recently saw a thread here discussing the differences in a two-lug v. three-lug action for rimfire.
IIRC, if the three-lug wan't accurate it wouldn't be an option.
Since I am rimfire stupid on best type lug set up and fire control then it's best to defer to those who know.
Maybe @Tony K Harper could explain for us all?

Stiller has indicated he made them entirely because people wanted them.
He also said from his experience…..zero difference in performance.

We have several of each at our local ARA matches. They all shoot great.
For a right hand shooter, Right bolt left port is the way to go for a benchrest setup.

For me, I would choose the trident for a shorter bolt throw. Can't go wrong with either.

shoot4fun,

The two lug action(s) requires more bolt lift to cock. They have a longer, less steep cocking ramp.

The three lugs have a shorter bolt lift with a steeper cocking ramp.

But here is the mechanical difference in a two-lug action verse a three-lug action with the Remmington style trigger with angled sear.

When this style action is cocked, the angled sears puts an upward pressure on the bolt.

With two lugs that pressure rocks the lugs on their seats. When the trigger is pulled that pressure unloads with an accompanying rocking effect on the bolt/lugs.

With a three lug when the trigger is released the rocking effect is somewhat mitigated by the support of the third lug when they are placed approximately 120 degrees apart.

Some may say this is the difference in a milking stool with two legs verse three legs.

That is probably unfair and mis leading because we know some can get just as much milk from the cow with a two-legged stool as others can with a three-legged stool.

All kidding aside, there have been many matches won with one lug, two lug, and three lug actions.

It is more about what you can do with what you have.

I thought 2 lugs were easier to cock because of the,\ longer less steep cocking ramp like in centerfire actions?

just asking

Jeff,
You are correct two lugs are easier to cock because the ramp is less steep. It is a longer throw but it requires less effort. Same as centerfires. If the ramps are polished and the firing pin spring isn’t too strong many will hardly notice the difference.

Tony,

"some can get just as much milk from the cow with a two-legged stool as others can with a three-legged stool."

I certainly agree with you, however, the milking stool I used when I was a little kid only had 1 leg! True story.
