250 Savage AI

After having read all the excess verbage from the previous 250 AI post I decided to post some simple instructions on fireforming the 250 Savage AI. Having built and operated 250 AIs in the past I can say that fireforming for one is dead simple.

Since the 250 is not a barrel burner don't bother with cream o wheat and all that other stuff. Unless you plan on burning a LOT of ammo.

Pick a bullet in the 90-95 gr weight range, cheap is good like bulk Remington or Winchester. Out of the load manual pick a powder in the middle of the burn rate range for the normal 250 Savage. Powder charge at least 1 gr under max listed. Seat the bullets into the lands. Shoot. Don't everheat the barrel. With a quality build accuracy is normally pretty good even fireforming.

I normally anneal after fireforming.

It ain't rocket science.

Good advice. And that's really all there is to it. The 87TNT has been very accurate fireforming in my .257AI and it works nicely on rockchucks. I'd add only one thing to this advice: Start wherever you feel comfortable with a load for the std. .250...... just as you would with any other cartridge. Then work up .5gr at a time until you find best accuracy..... just as you would with any other cartridge. And of course stop at any signs of overpressure...... just as you would with any other cartridge. If you have a chronograph definitely use it. You'll be pleasantly surprised at both the accuracy and velocity when you find a good fireform load.
