New Weatherby Cartridge 25 RPM. What can this cartridge do that a 25-06 can't?

Change the numbers around and similar can be said for the last 2 dozen new rounds brought to the market.

Closer to 257 Weatherby performance with std .473 bolt face is the supposed goal.

Looks like they shortened the RPM case which dropped the case capacity down from 84 to only 72.5gr H2O. That's a little disappointing but these high BC mid 130gr 25cal bullets are very long and Weatherby's aren't known for having very long allowable COAL's so that possibly had something to do with their decision to shorten the case and maybe they were concerned a full length RPM case necked down to 25cal would overshadow their 257Wby mag since they'd essentially have the same case capacity.

At 72.5gr H2O case capacity that puts this new 25 RPM Weatherby cartridge as a twin to a 25-06 Ack Imp which is a little faster then the standard 25-06 which is a twin to the 25-284.

With these new high bc mid 130 grain 25 cals it has generated more interest in 25 caliber builds then I think the 25cal world has ever seen. Hornady SAAMI'd the 25 Creedmoor not long ago and I see this being much more popular to the masses then this new Weatherby 25 RPM but only time will tell. Personally, I really wished Hornady would have come out with a 25 PRC off of their 6.5 PRC instead of a 25 Creedmoor but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they do in the near future.

I'm always for having "options" so whether or not one of these 25 RPM's is for me I have to applaud Weatherby for giving the shooting world another 25 cal option so good for them.

Big fan of this case concept. Standard length LA with enhanced case capacity all while fitting long-high bc bullets. I did some looking into wildcat 25s bases off a lengthened 284win case, -06 cases or a necked down,slightly shortened 6.5 wby rpm and this is eerily similar to what I had dreamt up. This new cartridge fits a niche. Let's hope the industry accepts it.

If Savage/Ruger don't start chambering rifles in 25 wby rpm within the next year or so, it might be safe to expect a 25 magnum coming from Hornady shortly.

I can load the 257 WBY and 7mm WBY long in my Mark V's.
They fit in the magazine.
It's the short ejection port that has me loading to a shorter COAL.

Something like a 25-6.5PRC would be nice but a 25 RSAUM would nicer and a 25 Western even nicerer.

Since Winchester's 6.8 Western has kind of been a flop and nonexistent if they necked the same cartridge down to 25 caliber it'd have a slight case capacity edge (75gr H2O vs 73gr) over the RSAUM and that could make for a pretty sweet short action setup. I built a 25 SAUM a year ago but had I known ADG was going to make 6.8 Western brass I probably would have gone that route.

SAAMI spec factory rifles will come standard with a 1:7.5” twist. That’s the benefit. Nothing new under the sun for wildcatters but this is good for factory rig guys.

How many weatherby cartridges are even offered by other rifle manufacturers? I highly doubt savage or anyone else chambers the rpm. They havent with the 6.5 or 338. Or any of the other main weatherbys. Cool rounds but stuck with weatherby rifles and brass most likely.

how do you "lengthen" a 284 case?

You start with a larger diameter brass disc.
When it's run through the forming dies this creates a longer case blank.
Then it's necked and the shoulder formed, along with the extractor groove and the primer pocket and flash hole punched.
Creating a longer 284 Win casing.

Winchester brought out the 284 so shooters could achieve 3006 performance in a short action with the same .473 bolt face.
Weatherby has created this round to out perform, velocity wise, the other 25 offerings using a .473 bolt face in a standard long action.

It looks like you could take your any rifle chambered in 25/06, run run the Weatherby reamer in, and with no other mods have a 25 Weatherby RPM.

I'm sure most of us have seen every iteration for just about every caliber available and some how we always justify the need for buying the "new one" when in reality most out perform each a bit here and there lol! Then came the, "oh no, SA are more accurate than a LA",yet a lot of these new offerings are long based actions, which goes to show the marketing scheme always moves the goal post back and forth. Not complaining here just reminds me of the days when you'd go hunting with a say a 308 and someone at camp would come in with a 300 Win mag stating how it killed everything and anything no matter where you hit lol. A lot of those guys couldn't handle the recoil and hit the side of a barn! I would usually mention it doesn't take much to kill a South Texas buck. I do enjoy long range target shooting and love putting any caliber to the challenge but of course that's me and a few friends who get together and put ourselves up to the challenge. 25RPM will hopefully be cost friendly as far as ammo as that WBY ammo is pricey as heck would be my concern.

100$ a box looks like. Some cheaper options tho but not by much. Atleast peterson makes the brass and hopefully offers it thru them and not exclusively weatherby. Should give you some decent reloadability
