25 Cal 131gn BJ bullet

Any suggestions on which powders give best accuracy? The 131 BJ has been out for awhile - any small 200-300 yard small groups?

JR

That will depend on the case you are using..
My 257 SAUM Imp likes H-1000 and Retumbo..
It's been to wet to get any real serious work done..

My case is 52gn water - I have tried H4831, RL22, and now going to try Imr4350 / RL16

So far H4831 has done well.... still looking for best group and node to shoot in.....

Howdy!

Besides what case are you thinking about using.....how long of a barrel do you have in-mind.

Please let us know.

Ok - so I designed this case based on the 284 win. First designed it for 6.5 shooting 135gn bibs and it was doing well. So when the BJ 131’s came out I thought it would work too but I did change the shoulder angle to 40 deg. All this for 1K comp. so I am getting closer with RL16 but still not great yet......

1st case is the Norma Dasher
2nd case is my new design
3rd case is 284

Barrel is 28 inch 7tw

Howdy, again! Thanx for the additional info.

Apples and....near apples:
I shoot 6mm wildcat w/ 51.2gr H2O case capacity.

I like to shoot w/ high load density, and have used powders like IMR7828 and RL-22 to propel 6mm bullet weights up to 108gr; from a 29” 5-groove 1-8 SS Broughton.

I can completely fill the case w/ IMR7828 under Sierra 85BTHP, and very nearly fill the case w/ 7828 when shooting heavier 105-108s. Pressures are fine and accuracy really good.

With RL-22, the case is very near full again; and I could shoot 41.5gr RL-22
under any 6mm bullet wt 85-108gr w/ pressures just fine.... and great accuracy.

After reading that RL-22 burns pretty “hot”, I began load testing w/ the newer RL-23; which is said to be pretty temp stable.

I thought that RL-23 might fill my wildcat’s case a tad more than RL-22 does. Testing showed that my max charge of RL-23 is 41.4gr vs. 41.7 gr when shooting RL-22 ( Sierra 95MKs ), so the RL-23 charge wt ended up a smidge < the RL-22 charge. All loads used FED Large Magnum Rifle Match.

My personal best ever 5-shot 100 yard group came when shooting 41.5gr RL-22 under Berger 107VLD. The 41.5gr charge shot pretty well under the 6mm bullet weights I listed, above. I only had to fine tune a tenth grain up or down to tighten the groups up for each separate bullet weight.
I’m hoping RL-23 proves to behave similarly, under Sierra 95 T-MK.

My point:
A lot of shooters would consider my powder choices to be “ too slow “ in burn rate, for the 6mm bullet weights listed; when shooting a case of 51.2gr H2O capacity. Many would reach for H4350.

For high load density, I think IMR4955 deserves a look.

Your larger diameter .25 cal wildcat which also has a little more case capacity than my 6mm.....could be considered an even better “fit” for powder burn rates like RL-23 and IMR7828 have. IMHO

This (25/284 capacity and heavy bullet) is an application where Hodgdon Hybrid-100V may prove worthy. Also, if you have it, don't overlook Superformance.;) RG

I found a very happy place in my 25-284 with the 131 BJ right 55.5 grains of RL 26. One big nickel size hole for 10 shots at 100 yards. Unfortunately, I have nowhere to shoot past 100. That's OK. On to the next wildcat!

What velocity are you at and which barrel?

So did you find the nodes approx at 2790, 2910, 3030, 3150 ?

Well, I found the best node at 50 grs. at 2870 fps. but, being a little bit of a speed freak I continued on. It came back together at 55.5. I might drop it down to 55.0, (that's where the load started coming in good) if my primer pockets start getting loose. However, the Lapua cases are showing no signs of pressure and bolt handle lift is normal.

I use H4350 in my 25 creedmoor and a 26" lilja 3 groove 7" twist. I use IMR 8133 in my 25-06 hawk hill 7.5" twist. The creed will run 2940fps with 43.2gr and starline brass. I get 3170fps from the 25-06 and rem brass. I tried retumbo and got good results, but since it's sold out everywhere I left it for now. The 8133 load will hold just under moa out to 600yds so far. The 25 creed held a respectable .4moa at 600t he other day, 90deg heat.
