25-45 Sharps

It just fills a void that most companys have overlooked due to low bc 25 caliber cartridges. Nobody delves into the 25 cal market as the 257 Roberts is dying a slow death. Now if SRC comes out with good BC bullets to support the cartridge to improve it, then it would be kinda cool. The fact that it fits into the standard AR platform is cool. There are many video's on you tube about it. I don't think it will last long due to lack of really good bullets and brass without doing a lot of forming and screwing around. I would think the 6.5 Grendel and others might be easier to get up and running.

I thought the 257 TCU was a silhouette pistol cartridge, can it properly operate in an AR? SRC and Black Rain Ordnance are claiming the 25-45Sharps produces 3000 fps at the muzzle with a 87gr bullet through a 20" barrel, making it great for hunting medium size game. What do you think this cartridge is more suited for?

Looking at the case specs, the 257 TCU and 25-45 sharps are very similar. Even though the sharps claims to produce 3000 fps with an 87gr bullet, I have yet to see anyone with reload data that can duplicate that. You'd also have to take into consideration that it's a proprietary cartridge.

That said, I'd strongly consider the 6x45 which seems to have a little better history and more available reloading data.

Knowing nothing about the 223 wildcat scene, or the 25 caliber scene, I thought the 25-45 Sharps was a great new idea and had some cash in my pocket, so I ordered the dies and a barrel. I tested my first loads last weekend, but I only had 100gr bullets to test with, so I couldn't try to replicate the claims SRC is making.

Accuracy was very good (3/4" @ 100y), but speeds were disappointing (2553). I'll try some different load combinations, but I'm not sure this rig will live up to the hype.

Randy Robinett is, I think, making some .257 bullets.

I'm not inclined to go there, but if one wanted to play with a .257, my inclinations would be:

1. 6 BR necked up.
2. 6.5 Grendel necked down. I guess you could get to it via necking up 220 Russian or Norma 6 PPC brass.
3. 6.5x47L necked down.
4. 243 necked up / 308 necked down.

Greg, I know a lot of guys here wish developing a new cartridge was a simple process. After reading your last post I got to thinking......how many more cartridges can we make to satisfy our hunting and target shooting needs. I myself, am guilty of wanting to be the first or only kid on the block with the latest toy, that become novelties to hang in the trophy room for bragging rights. Just my two cents but don't get me wrong I love shooting especially cartridges based on the 223.

Developing your own cartridge is as easy as pie, if you don't get crazy about it.

I'm in the middle of doing it by necking up a 6.5x47L to 7 mm. Heck, I don't own a single CF rifle that I can readily buy ammo for. Might as well have what I want. To be honest, my son's hunting rifle is a 260 Remington so that he would have the option to buy ammo if he decides that he doesn't want to reload once he's out on his own.

If reamer design is an issue, I think Randy is already using a 257 based on the BR case. He's alway happy to assist a customer.

But, to do a 257 based on the 6 BR, you could use a 6 BR floating pilot reamer, a necking reamer and a 257 throater. Modify a 6 BR bushing reamer by drilling out the bushing shelf a tad. You could make a seater from a Wilson 257 blank or by modifying the sliding collar in a Redding Competition seater.

Easy peasy.
