25-06 rebuild questions

My old man gave me a 30 year old remmy 700 25-06 that he hasnt shot in years. Its in great shape and he says it shoots great too. I never rebuilt a rifle so I will obviously have a smith do it. I want an H&S stock and a bull barrel on it. It will be a predator, varmint and target gun. I like to shoot prone so I will be putting a Harris bi-pod on it too. I dont need it to be benchrest level accurate. I just want it to be a good shooting 25-06. I been shooting and hunting my whole life and just recently started reloading. I never built a rifle though. My questions are.....is the H&S stock, bull barrel and bi-pod the only thing I need to do? who makes good quality barrels at a good price? and should I have the stock bedded?
Also, what do you guys think about that caliber? Ballistically it seems like a awesome round! Anybody on here shoot this round alot and know what it is capable of at different distances? I would like to shoot it from 100 all the way out to 600+ yards. Its a free rifle so the build seems like a no brainer!!! Thanks

My question is : do you reload? If so, ya open up a whole lotta options. 6.5-06/25-06/6.5x284/284/ackley improved. HS makes a pretty good stock, but still needs glass bedding, McMillan is better and has a better selection when it comes to style and options. As to barrels, Heart, and Krieger, with Krieger being the quicker of the two to get, Bruno has them in stock. I had heart screw a tube on my sako aIII with good results, but I was only looking for hunting accuracy, and they have a pretty long wait for barrel jobs. Good luck, hope it helps.

As the other post says, shoot it as is and see what happens. I learned to glass and pillar bed on factory rifles that I wasn't afraid of messing up on.
I shoot (2) standard 25-06s and (1) 25-06 AI.

Im putting the h&s stock and bull barrel simply for looks. My question....is the stock and barrel replacement simple? Or is there more to it? Do i simply buy a new stock and barrel and give it to a smith and have him swap them out? Like i said before, Im doing this for looks. The gun shoots fine.

actually the bolt and action on this rifle is extremely smooth! I can tell remington put alot more time and love into their rifles back in the day.

Yep, that simple, kinda. Just be sure to get a factory taper on the barrel, and be sure to order the proper stock and barrel channel.

You might want to call jim briggs at northland shooters supply 1-763-682-4296. Talk to him about his remmage barrels and barrel nut he makes. With his system you dont need to send it to a smith for the barrel change. You will need a go gage, barrel nut wrench and a reciever wrench and a barrel vise. Once you buy the tools the sky is the limit.

You are spot on!! I just priced it out both ways.
1- Blank $300-$350 and a 3 month wait
2- Chamber and fit barrel $200
3- True up action $100-$200
4- Gas back and forth to a smith
Im figuring around $750- $850

RemmAge
1- Barrel-Barrel nut- recoil lug Around $400
2- Tools needed around $125
This is not a huge savings and probably is not as good of a job as a good smith would do but from this point on you
have everything you need to rebuild over and over.
I do agree with some of the above posts also as to shoot it and exhaust every avenue before diving in to a rebuild. She probably will shoot as is.

Totally agree with other poster - try it first as is - those older 700's typically shot very well especially with taliored handloads. Seen several group in the 1/2 moa range.

The 25-06 is easy to reload - My first choice would be IMR 4831 followed by IMR 4350.

If accuracy is not what you desire, before spending money on a new stock, I'd free float the barrel. All my Remy's shoot much better with the barrel free floated.

Bedding the action which is relatively in expensive almost always improves accuracy.

Great cartridge although a little heavy for varminting due to recoil but if you can handle that it will reach out there.

If I had gotten something like that from my father I wouldn't change a thing. You can always buy an accurate rifle. Family hand-me-downs are much harder to come by and worth a whole lot more.
This is great!!! I have been fighting with a Weatherby 22-250 for a year now that dad gave me. It will touch two then a flier with many different loads. I want to re-barrel but like you said its worth a lot more than a One Holer. Very nicely put!!
