25-06 Loads 100 Gr Bullet

So I just put together a 25-06. It is an older Stagger Savage, ER Shaw SS sporter barrel, Boyds stock all beded up.
I have 100gr NBTs and Sierra 100Gr BTSP (GK's I believe). Plan to try 4831 and N-160 I have both handy.

Any suggestions on loads with these powders and bullet combos?

BTW the base will be EGW, Rings Weaver 6 hole, Scope Burris 4-14 FF2

The Nosler manual has decreased the load from the older manual but I used to load 54 gr. of IMR-4831 under the 100 gr. Nosler BT with great accuracy. CAUTION - ALWAYS WORK UP YOUR LOADS.

Plan to try 4831
Which flavor? Imr or H?

I've done load development on 5 different 25-06 rifles over the past several years. Lots of powder and bullets. Sold 3 of them because they just didn't satisfy my need for accuracy for extended hunting.

Use the Berger 115 VLD-H currently and if I'm looking for the highest velocity I use RL 19, if I'm Ok with slower but more accurate, I use IMR 4831. And I've made some pretty wide circles on some of the rifles but came back to that bullet and those powders.

For my best rifle I'm using Lapua brass, Norma in the other one. One of the rifles I sold (Rem 700 BDL SS), killed most of my deer and antelope over the past 12 years. I'd share loads, but I don't see much overlap between what you have an what I use.

Sorry H 4831

Good reason to hang onto those older manuals. Back referencing older manuals usually shows a decided change in many loads in the newer manuals, opting for lower pressure loads.

Years ago, the Nosler recipe for IMR-4831 was my usual load for those lighter bullets like the BT. It's still a good load so start low and work your way up. I happen to have tested Re16 and Hybrid 100v with excellent results, just in case your barrel differs with ours.;)

Should you decide to try some other bullets there is good data available.

Enjoy!

Mine is a M700 with a Wilson barrel.I use 100 grain Sierra Matchkings for targets and groundhogs and 100 grain Nosler Partitions for deer.I get well in the 3200 fps range with it.I get along good with H4831SC or IMR 4831 if I can't get the Hodgdon.I'm right at book max with either one,56 grains of H4831SC,and I can't remember the IMR charge weight.Start low and work up and don't use mix brass if you can keep from it.

While not a 25-06, i recently built a Savage 111 in 257 Roberts AI.
I initially tried Norma MRP. But i think it's too slow.
Going to look more at RL19, IMR 4831, Ramshot Hunter.
I may also play with Alliant PP4000MR.

If you own a 25.06 .... RL22 is your friend! I've worked with a 25.06 for a very long time and there are lots of different powders that work well with this caliber. For me personally RL22 has been the most consistent in both accuracy and velocity over the years in bullet weights of 100 - 120grs. I've heard of this powder being temp sensitive but I've ever had an issue with it here in NC.

I had a fussy Ruger #1 in 25-06 that gave me fits until I tried the 100 Sierra with AA3100. The Powder has been discontinued. Shooters Luck! :)

Not a fussy #1 but I did have several loads where the AA3100 was excellent. And yes, of course, they discontinued it. But I was in the LGS who is also a local skeet shooter, looking for another anomaly when I discovered a case (4) of AA3100 in 8-lbers. I still have 1-8lb. left...;)

There is a lot of good powders for the 25-06 and 100 grain bullets. 40+ years ago it was surplus 4831 in a 2 gallon can with a 100 gr flat base Game King. I have had good luck over the years with several powders. RE22 and 7828 have done well. The last one I put together shot VERY well with 4955.
If you try 4955, start at the low end. Hodgdons max numbers was really hot.

I've had a number of .25-06 rifles and have been shooting them since 1965. At that time, H4831 was the most used powder for the popular bullet weights of 87, 100, and 117 grain bullets in what was then a wildcat cartridge. I've tried other powders over the years. I think H4831 remains the best choice, but if you have other powders available, try them.

I used IMR 4350, velocity is 3200 with 100g sierra and Nosler

Later used IMR 4831 and R#19

Now, R#25, Win Mag primers, Win brass, 100g is 3300 with less than 9fps SD

After some testing I ended up with the 100gr Sierra BTSP over H4831 WLR primer. Gun is shooting right around 1/2” at 100yds
Pretty happy for a hunting load.
