25-06 Custom Coyote Loads

Hey guys I recently posted on here asking for the best factory varmint load for my Remington 700 CDL 25-06. I did not think I would have the recourses to reload anytime soon. Well I was incorrect I now plan to load my own varmint loads and need advice on a load that will work on coyotes that will cause minimal damage. I still understand that a 25-06 is not a true varmint gun, and to expect some damage. Most importantly I want the coyote dead first and I will deal with damage later. Any reviews or advice would be appreciated.

The Sierra 87 gr. was the best I found for my 257 AI, which is abt. identical to the 25-06. If you gun like them that is what I would recomand. If not I would go the Sierra 90 gr. HP`s or the 100 gr Spitzer or BT.

There are different ways to look at this depending on how far you are going to shoot, how good of a shot you are, how well your rifle shoots and what damage you are wanting to stay away from. you could always load up anything you want and go for a neck or head shot. A light varmint round to the body otherwise. I don't worry about the damage myself and shoot 115gr Bergers in a 25cal.

Good step in beginning to reload. For predator hunting loads (coyote, fox, cats) in which you want to save fur, use a controlled expansion bullet in the 25/06 to minimize fur damage. I've used 100 grain Nosler Partition and Sierra Pro-Hunter. For actual varmint hunting (squirrels, groundhog/rockchucks) the most spectacular results I've seen come from the 75 V-Max; Speer TNT are good performers for the money.

I have both a 25-06 and 25-284. Hornady 75 gr Vmax are great for spraying prairie dogs. I've killed several coyote's. They tend to be a bit destructive. I've had great luck with Nosler 115 gr Ballistic tips as well on deer. Again they all do a great job on critters. If your into saving hides you may want to consider a small caliber like the 17's Small hole in with no exit. Good luck Scott

I would go with one of the solid copper bullets like the Barns 80 or100 gr TTSX or the Hornady 90 gr GMX over IMR 4350 powder. They will expand but not explode like most other lead core bullets. Be sure and follow the directions for these bullets and start low on the powder charge and work up and keep them at least 50 thousands off the lands. As I think I stated in the your other post ANY cup and core bullet will be tough on hides out of a 25-06. I have shot ground hogs and fox with 117 sierra and Hornady bullets and they were nearly cut in half.
