25.06 Brass question...

Just won a 25.06 in a raffle. So I am new to this cartridge.
Is it possible to neck down 30.06 brass for the 25.06 ???
Any and all help is appreciated...Thanks

Sure.

That's how it was done for maybe 3 decades. Obviously... check length, neck thinkness and shoulder dimensions for any headspace issues. You can also use 270 brass with attention to length.

Maybe a quick annealing job after necking down would be helpful also.

Have fun.

Sure can, that's how it started just as Capital Mal said. Taking it to 270 neck (.277) first and then .25 is easier on the brass,

After you get your cases these are tried and true standard loads. Work up to them.
100 gr bullet. 52 grs IMR 4350
115 to 117 gr 49 grs IMR 4350 or 52 grs H4831

Sierra 100, Nosler BT 100, Sierra 117, Nosler 115 BT are serious deer thumpers.

I was one of those BIGGER is better caliber guys when I first started out deer hunting. If it was not 30 cal or did not have Magnum in the name I did not want it. Problem was I could put a perfect shot on a deer and they would run 50 to 100 yards before going down. I was helping my buddy do crop damage control on a big farm in NC. I went through a number of different BIG caliber and Magnum rifles and MANY different bullet styles and weights and loads trying to find one that would drop a deer in it's tracks most of the time. My buddy kept telling me "get you a 25-06 like mine". I was hard headed for a number of years until it finely dawned on me that every time he shot a deer it dropped in it's tracks. I finely broke down and got me a Rem 700 varmint barrel 25-06. I loaded up some 117 gr Sierra Pro Hunters with 52 grs H-4831 and it would shoot bug holes. On the farm we were to take 100 deer a year and the policy was if it is brown put it down. First day of deer season three doe came into the field that I was hunting. They came right by my stand not 25 yards. I waited until they got out into the field. The biggest one turned broad side right at 175 yards out. I put the cross hairs on it's shoulder and squeezed the trigger and it hit the ground like a ton of brick. The other two took off running and I got on one and swung through it like you would with a shot gun and when the cross hairs came even with it's ears I finished my trigger squeeze. I heard a POP as the bullet hit dead center in the front shoulder and the deer did a barrel roll in the air and landed in a big mud hole full of water that was on the side of the field from the rains the night before. It looked like the gun camera pictures of WWII shooting down a Zero when it hit the water. Two shots to deer dropped on impact, looking good. Can't hunt on Sunday in NC so the next Monday morning I was in a stand overlooking a small field that had a fresh clear cut beside it. They had pushed up all the left over tree laps in big rows that had clear lanes between that you could see about 1000 yard or more down. This big 8 point buck came walking a cross the clear cut picking it's way through the rows and when he got into the row that was straight away from my stand he started walking away from me. He kept getting further a way and I was not going to take a rear end shot. He finely turn around and started walking back toward me. When he got to were I estimated was 300 yards he stopped. I had my rifle zeroed so it would be dead on at 300 yards. I placed the cross hairs on his chest and squeezed the trigger. POP went the bullet and the buck jumped straight up in the air and did a back flip landing on his back and he kicked his back legs a few times and he was dead. I said to myself SOLD ON THE 25-06. I have not been without one for over 18 years now and have killed hundreds of deer with them and 99.9% have dropped in their tracks. ;D

Thanks to everybody for responding. I really appreciate the help. If you have anymore info on the 25.06 just PM......

You want to anneal the cases first, makes life a whole bunch easier. 25-06 is a great round. The easiest way is to form them & most time cosuming is to run them thru a 270 seater die, then 270 sizer die, then 25-06 seater, & lastly 25-06 sizing die.

I hope you have better luck than I am having. I'm doing the same thing right now, resizing 30-06 and 270 for my 25-06. I have no trouble resizing the brass, but niether will chamber in my 25-06. I've trimmed to length, but they will not chamber. My 25-06 is a Sako, spent brass is Federal.

Sounds like you need to push the shoulder back .001 to .002 of an inch. That's the trouble with using used brass.

I aneal first, 30-06 resize without expander,270 resize without expander, aneal, 2506 resize slightly long and trim to length, check brass in gun and adjust the dies to good fit for head space. NOTE! all forming should not set the shoulder back until you use the 25-06 dies. I recommend neck turning to at least 70% clean-up. anealing about every 3rd firing will reduce neck splits.

It is definitely worth the education one gets while performing the processes. Having never done anything like this before in my reloading experiences, I look forward to it, the good, and the not so good.

You can go from 30 caliber right to 25 cal if you go to 270 first you are working
the brass 2 times not just one I have done it this way for over 40 years.

When i first started to reload i myself wanted to neck down and make 25-06 brass, and i did. If you dont have a neck micrometer and a way of turning the neck down dont even try. I had a bunch all sized and loaded and had shot 5 of them with great results, the 6th was a different story. The 6th kicked really hard blew powder out the vent hole and some hit me in the face. The bolt required a 2x4 block to open, the primer was down in the mag well. I thought i would cull the brand of brass that i had just shot and shoot the rest. Only when i looked at the head stamp it was gone. The pressure was so high that the brass flowed till the head of the case was was smooth and shinney. No idea which brand it was so i pulled the bullets and powder and chucked the rest. The moral of this story is if you had to ask if this could be done you dont have the knowledge to be doing it. Buy some brass learn to neck turn and measure necks then experiment. The pressure is too high to be playing and trying to save $35 dollars on some brass. ebb

EBB IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THAT LOAD TO EXPLODE LIKE THAT YOU DID NOT CHECK EACH POWDER LOAD WEIGHT WITH A 25-06 IF YOU ONLY PUT HALF A LOAD OF POWDER IN IT IT WILL BECOME A BOMB PO ACKLEY WARNS OF THIS.
DMICKEY
IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THE HEAD STAMP SAYS MOST OF MY 25-06 AMMO WAS MADE FROM 270 OR 30-06 I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 53 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM YET. PLUS A 270 OR 30-06 WILL NOT CHAMBER IN A 25-06
OKIE2

When I bought my 25/06 I also grabbed 100 lapua 30/06 cases and a Redding 25/06 form and trim die.I turn 2 thou off the necks before forming to help beat the dreaded donut and then 1 pass in the form die and a run through a full length 25/06 die.

For goodness sake, hobby or no hobby, just buy some 25-06 specific brass and be done with it and spend the time loading and shooting safe brass. I have had two 25-06's and still have one, it is a great round, I personally haven't found the magic that is written in this thread, but that goes for a lot of calibers. I have many loads that I have used and cronographed if you are interested, just PM me. Good luck....

Truth be told, I did purchase 25.06 brass so I can load some up and shoot SAFELY.
I am going to resize some 30.06 brass down to 25.06, but as a project, not a neccessity. So thanks to all for your safety concerns. They are all appreciated.
And thanks to everyone who posts in this forum, there is alot to learn and erring on the side of safety is BIG.
