25-06 10 twist

how heavy of a bullet , I know it depends on type and length, will a 25-06 with a 10 twist stabilize, generally ? ..... Thanks Neil

I have owned 3 different .25-06's and currently have a custom that I had put together. If you have a 10 twist it will handle any bullet that is made. I have found that most of my gun prefered bullets in the 115-120 grain range.

I currently use the Berger 115 grain VLD exclusively. It is more accurate than any bullet I have tried. They will shoot 1 to 1.5" three shot groups at 300 yards consistantly from my hunting rifle. Makes me wonder what they could do in a dedicated competition rifle... They also do a hell of a job on Deer and Hogs here in Texas.

I can save you a lot of time and effort on load development... There is only ONE powder for heavy bullets in the .25-06, that is H-4831SC. Yes you may be able to get a couple fps faster with other powders but don't be woo-ed by that like I was. The H-4831SC is SO temp. stable and SO accurate it is not even worth wasting barrel life testing any thing else. I have and learned !

Hope this helps. Any questions ask away.

The 1:10 twist works fine with the 115 Berger VLD, or the other 115's, 117's and 120's on the market.

4831 is indeed a mighty fine powder for the .25-06, but there are a couple of other powders you might want to try, just out of curiosity you understand... :)

I have a Shilen #6 SS select match 26" long 10" twist on a Rem 700 action and it shoots it's best with 117 Sierra (Flat base) Pro Hunters and 49 grs IMR 4350 with CCI 250 primers in a Rem case. Under 1" at 300 yards on a calm day. But would have to agree with H-4831 or the SC version over all are probably the best powder with 115 to 120 gr bullets that the 10 twist shoots great. 52 grs H-4831 with 115 to 120 gr bullets has been a standard load for the 25-06 for many a year. By the way the 117 gr Sierra is one of the most drop them in their tracks deer killing bullets I have ever used.

I shoot a Savage 26" SS barreled 25-06 with 115gr. Bergers 48.5grn IMR 4350 and CCI BR2 primers. Makes nice little ragged clover leaf hole groups at 100yds. I use it for Varmint Benchrest Silhouette shooting out to 1000yds. and it works great. Knocks over the steel targets with authority
