244 H&H Magnum load data...

I just received my newly custom built rifle in 244 H&H Magnum and I need to see if anyone over here may have loading data for it. The barrel length is 30" and the twist rate is 1-13" and 3-groove...

Thank You!

Just curious. How did you decide on that caliber for a custom rifle??

Anyway, Ackley's Handbook gives several loads for bullets ranging from 75 to 105 grains weight. You're going to need a very slow powder, like H4831, H1000, or even 50BMG powders.

Rather than trying to type out the info, send me an e-mail and I will scan the pages for you.

HANDBOOK FOR SHOOTERS & RELOADERS

Two Volumes. It's still available in it's 20th printing on line and from such places as Brownells. Sinclair, Midway etc.

A very good source for all kinds of information even if it is 40 years old. Lots of wildcat loads too.

Did you ever make contact with the shooters in PHX?

Ray,

thank you for your help and offer. My e-mail address is: deersniper_6284@yahoo.com

In all honestly, the 244 H&H Magnum has always, for whatever reason, intreeged me and seemed like such a fascinating cartridge. I have owned and shot just about every 6mm there is and have even designed a few of my own over the years but, this big belted 6mm is one that has always eluded me, that is until now...

I built my new 244 H&H Magnum off of a Remington 721 action that has been completely blue-printed and set up as a single shot with the addition of a Davidson single shot follower glued in place. The action is pillar bedded in a McMillan fiberglass stock - Tooley MBR. A Jewell Trigger has been installed and adjusted to a glass breaking 6 ounces. The barrel is a Lilja 3-groove, 1-13" twist that is 30" in length. A tapered base is secured to the action with 6 8-40 scresw and on top of that are 5-scope rings that have been line reamed and lapped and sitting in those rings is a Burris Black Diamond 8X-32X-50mm...

My bullet of choice will be either a Sierra 85 gr. B.T. - H.P. game King or a Hornady 87 gr. V-MAX...

The sole purpose of this rig!!! To shoot deer at l-o-n-g - r-a-n-g-e....

I hate to sign off with "monkeybutt" so I'll just use "M"....

Check your e-mail. Had a bit of a glitch but something is winging it's way to you right now.

I hope you are not on Dial Up.

Ray,

I could'nt get anything to pull up and it seems my computer has a problem and won't let me download anything. Could you pick a powder for an 85 gr. bullet and e-mail it to me....

M

Ray,

thank you for the information, I appreciate you taking the time to look this up for me...

This chamber is cut tight enough that what fireforming there is, will be absolutely minimal and as such I should be able to start working on loads first thing Monday morning. I'll let you know how things go...

Thank you again.

M

Ray,

I got 20 rounds of brass fireformed and did a load development at 200 yards. Shooting Sierra's 85 gr. B.T. - H.P. Game King bullet. My loads are shooting 4,462 fps. and average .216" for five 3-shot groups at 200 yards. I shot two 3-shoot groups at 600 yards with one being 2.333" and the second one was 2.762. I did'nt think that was too shabby for an old deer hunter...

I am more than pleased with the results and performance from this round and am now very glad that I chose this particular cartridge. I'll never shoot more than 3 shots at one time before letting the barrel rest for a little while, so it should last me for a while....

Ray,

I don't believe I have the skill or knowledge to shoot in a B-R match but I have shot many deer well past the 1,000 yard mark over the years and so far, all were with one well placed shot. I'm not bragging, just take pride in the ability to pull off a shot at long or extreme range and have the place to consistantly practice at those kind of ranges....
