243win vs. 6mm ppc,dasher,6xc,6mm rem.,6br

My vote's for the straight .243 Win., a 105 VLD at 3200 FPS out of my rifle is less than 220" of drop to 1000, and there's ample quality brass available. I've heard of people getting 3100+ FPS out of the 115 grainers with Reloder 17; I don't believe I have a fast enough twist (1:9") to run the 115s though so I haven't tried it to confirm it.

If it were a shorter distance I'd be willing to bet one of the others would be better for accuracy all other things being equal.

Here are just a few of my random thoughts on your question. Realize that many will have a different opinion.

6PPC - Not enough boiler room for 1K

6mm BR - similar to PPC but not quite as bad

Dasher and BRX - Very good at 1K when winds are low to med. Will shoot 105-107 gr bullets with excellent results
Really good bbl life. Probably the best compromise to shoot 600 yds mostly with occasional 1K. Bbl 3000+ rds

6XC - Good with 105-107 gr bullets - not enough boiler room for 115s - Shorter bbl life than anything based on the BR case. Bbl life between 2000 to 2500 rds.

243 - 6mm Rem - excellent velocity with either 105-107 as well as 115. Short bbl life but excellent performance at 1K. 6MM Rem really needs a long action for extracting loading rounds.

If you shoot mostly 600 yds and a couple of times a year shoot 1K, the Straight 6mm BR, Dasher or BRX would be hard to beat. No case forming with the std. BR.

6XC is an excellent cartridge. Not quite as accurate as a Dasher or BRX but easy brass and loading. The best choice for someone just getting into the game.

All that advice is worth exactly what you paid for it :-)

Straight 243 or 6mmSLR? Brass is cheap and easy to find. You can always down load a 243 but you can't upload a 6xc or dasher to 243 velocities!

He didn't ask about price.......He asked best. I am close to being fully convinced that the Dasher may be the best 1K round....PEROID!!!!

I know that that is a HUGE statement to make, but.....the more I see them (and ocationaly shoot them) the closer I come to building a full on 1K rig and park the 30 cal magnum!!!!!!

And again....Price.....When you add up the total cost of shooting, say, 3000 - 4000 rounds.....COMPEDITIVE ROUNDS........You will have had to buy THREE 243 win tubes to only one dasher.

Also....check the equipment list at any 600 - 1000 yard match. I can't remember even seeing a 243 Win listed.

Just my .02 , for what it is worth. ;)

All mentioned will do well. Personally, I like the 6br for simplicity and when the wind blows a little I like the Dasher. The other cartridges, including the dasher, will perform excellent but not with out a cost, be it component availability barrel life or even recoil if your shy that way.
I went with the dasher for speed/barrel life ratio and to learn about the fire forming process. Fire forming is hard on your match barrel, maybe best to get a barrel just to make brass if you want to make your own. Then there are dies to contend with. I think the dasher die from Redding is still a custom. You can use a 6br die for the brx.
I think Sam Hall has done a pretty good job with the BRX. Heck, he's probably done well with everything.
It might depend on what type shooting your going to do. If you shoot a lot of bullets fast you might want something you don't have to rebarrel often.
Best can mean price to a lot of people, but you make a good point.
Stuff to think about.

I have recently gone through the same process. I shoot in a monthly varmint shoot with a 600 yard max. I started with a .243 Win and 107 SMK's, moved on to 115 DTAC's, and 1,200 rds later was in the market for a new barrel. After a lot of thought I chose the 6X47 over the 6BRX, I felt it could push the 105 weight bullets to 3,050 with a single based powder and lower peak pressure. I weighed all the variables and this is what I chose.

A little food for thought. The dasher in the fireforming loads are extremely accurate on the three barrels that I have been involved with. If you go with a dasher, you can use a 107 or 108 for the fireforming and go shoot matches. I have shot a practice match and a real match with fireforming loads at 600 yds. Practice=595 out of 600. Real match was 590/31x out of 600. I don't believe that the fireforming is any harder on the barrel than the full blown rounds. The only drawback is the ES varies about 10-20 fps more than the real loads, but I cannot find much vertical difference at 600 yds.
