243AI with 70 gr Bullets

Guys, I'm thinking of working up a load with 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips in my 243 AI, mainly for coyote work. My rifle is built around a 20" Bartlein 5R Barrel with 1:12 twist. Just wondering what experience you guys have with this combo & what powders have worked well for y'all.

Thanks,
Ty

We shot untold thousands of 69g Bergers and 70g nosler ballistic tips, 70g tnt out of various 243 AI's. We had zero freebore chambers.

With the dozen or so hart 14 & 12 twists partner and I pretty much shot the same loads in Rem 7/08 brass that we neck turned, then just necked down to 243 dia necks.

CCI 250 very important for less than 10 fps SD
fire form with 47 or 47.5g of Win 760
formed load of 48 or 48.5 with an absolute max load of 50.0g
69-70g touching the lands, 69g berger, 70g Tnt, 70g nosler
These loads, even fire forming, shot bug holes, and 48.5g was not a hot load in Remington brass

We did not find that win 760 and H414 are the same powders, 414 seemed a tad slower.

We shot 26"-30" barrels and blew some shore nuff fine holes in coyotes. Also, the 80g Sierra Blitz Boat tail is one of the finest coyote bullets ever made. 80g seems to be the breaking point with super speed and accuracy, R#19 with a cci 250, just KER PLOPS coyotes!

It really puzzles me as to why 370bc has had runners with the 70g BT, we just blew the coyotes up with them at 3700-3850 fps. Even out of our rem 700's, the 70g Nosler blew some pretty big holes in coyotes..not a fur friendly bullet. 370 BC's comment makes me think that he got a bad lot, which sometimes happens. I have never shot a coyote with a 70g blitz king, that would be interesting because it is the most explosive of all the 70g bullets.

You may want to work up to this load because of the difference in chamber dimensions but I use to shoot 50.0 grains of H414 under 70 grain Ballistic tips. Shot well in my model seven, Lilja barrel (25”).

Our rifles shot the same load, 50g and the Win mag primer and 215's really got good velocity with great accuracy.

WORK UP TO THE 50G LOAD!!! We shot 12 & 14 twists.

Good luck

I’ll have to dig out the book tomorrow, but 70 TNTs worked very well with Varget in my 12 Twist Hart. Not the absolute fastest, and definately not fur friendly, but real accurate.

MQ1,

I'll be looking forward to seeing your data. I'm planning on beginning with Varget.

Almost Ditto, 49.0 grs. H414 over 70 gr. Bergers.

75 grn. Horn. V-Max with 47.6 grn. H4350 out of a Pac Nor 1 in 12" Super Match works very well for me.

Not an exact fit to your application but when I lived in WY the 70gr Nosler was my go to for antelope out of a straight 243, never had one take more than a couple steps.
