243

given a 20 inch barrel and a 100 grain bullet how much velocity would there be ib differance from a 22 inch barrel.lets say the 100 grain is doing 3000 fps.

Seems like I have read a couple reports that on an average, for every inch on or off a barrel, you loose or gain around 30 FPS. I think Bullberry and others have run tests, maybe even Calhoon.

There's a 660 in 308 on a local auction site I've been keeping an eye on. Pretty decent shape. We'll see where it ends up.

I started killing deer with my 243 reloads back in 1975, and for years I never used anything but Speer 90 grain Spitzers. I never had a clue that some bullets were more "big game oriented" and neither did the deer. Those bullets always caused a devastating wound, with lots of meat damage, and the deer almost always flopped over where I shot them. -- even with a bad shot. jd

My go-to is 85gr. Sierra GameKing over the top of H4350.

I use a hot load of RL26 and a mag primer behind a 100gr Speer btsp. I've gotten bang/flops with a 2 finger exit on rib shots the 3 yrs I've used them.

A 20-30 feet per second change for every inch of barrel length change is a reasonable approximation. This is not absolute and changes with with powder burn rate, and cartridge case. It so falls apart with short barrels and long for cartridge barrel.

Usually when I see the cutting off the barrel experiments the loss if fps is less than usually quoted in posts like this. No big deal because it's pretty much immaterial in the scheme of things. Your targets tells you all you need to know. Yea I bit, bought the new Garmin Chrony, it's simple, easy and a neat toy. Like always I will get it out after developing a load so when the inevitable question, How fast is it? pops up, I can have an honest snswer.

I have 3 rifles in 243win... a 20", a 22" and 26"... What I said above is only my experience and it can differ depending on barrel steel, and the type of rifling etc.

I don't tend to push mine all the way because I'm after the accuracy first and foremost. Then I like long brass life and barrel life, so I tend to use certain powders in the 243win (mainly H-4831sc) because it seems to always deliver great accuracy and longer barrel life.
