.243 Winchester for Whitetails

100 grain Speer Grand Slam, the name says it all. Like a 2x4 hitting a wet blanket on an outdoor clothesline . . . the sound is unmistakable: WAP! Since I rarely shoot beyond three-hundred yards, I always hear the distinct WAP regarding whitetail fare. Many .243 caliber bullets hit real hard, but the Grand Slam sound is unique. Cliffy

I cleaned a small buck in S.C. a week ago that a fella shot with a .243 winchester 100 gr. silver tip. 250 + yards quartered to him, in behind r. shoulder and exit in front of l.leg. The deer traveled maybe 30 yards, it did the job with no loss of meat. My brother hunts a .243 and is new to hunting but all 3 deer that have been shot with his rifle did not take a step. I shoot mostly Savage rifles and have a brand new barrel that I've not had the chance to screw on yet. I do shoot a 6CM most of the time.

Cliffy, ditto on the 95 gr Nosler partition - distinct WHOP sound. Front half opens fast, shears off and can usually be found in the wound channel. Unexpanded rear half exits out the far side causing a blood trail if needed. Deer goes down fast.

Set up a 243 Win for my 8 1/2 year old Grandson in Oct 2008. 12" length of pull, cheek piece and low recoil handloads. He stood 4'2" and weighed just over 60lb. He is very comprotable with centerfire 22lr, 22 Hornet and 223 of the bench. He killed three deer, 2 six pointers and a doe with three shots at 50 to 60 yards. Third ran 30 -40 feet.

Load: 75 gr Sierra HP @ 3100 fps. Not a long range bullet for sure, but for just behind the shoulder and under 100 yards, it is deadly. He is now 9 1/2 and 70 lb and shot a doe last month. One shot and it dropped in its tracks.

He killed a prairie dog in June at 425 yards. Couldn't guess how much I enjoy and love this KID.

Merry Christmas Old Doug

Old Doug, kids are to enjoyed and to be taught. Sounds like you're doing it RIGHT! A .243 Winchester starts a new hunter out correctly. Since my sons can now teach me a thing or three afield, I'm working currently with my grandchildren. Joy mostly comes from teaching what we've learned. Merry Christmas! Cliffy
