243 Win twist, barrel length

So… using 105s I’ve had good results in a 30” with a 8” twist. Tried 108s and a small amount of 110s with limited success. Using some of the twist calculators it seems like the 8” twist is marginal for the heavies.

Has anyone had similar results and for others with a 7.5” or tighter, have you seen better results with the 108-110s with something less than an 8” twist? Has barrel length/desired velocity played into the mix?

Curious what others have experienced.

Not a 243 but I own a 7 and a 7.5 twist 6x47 and is shoot 105-115 class bullets through them both with success. Including the 110 sierra.

I don’t think you’d go wrong with a 7.5.

I’ve shot 95 tipped matchkings from the 7 twist with very good results. No bullet failures.

Thanks, id love to move to a 7.5. Just wondering if I’ve been too book blinded and a 8 twist is real world okay for the 108-110s

My 243AI with 1 - 7.5 Tw. works well with up to the 115 class bullets. Seem to stabilize great with good groups.

Rainbow1,

I ran moly JLK and Tubb's 115s out my first match .243 which has the same specs that you listed. Tubb's bullets had to be sorted for ogive and overall length, but worked well. Used VV N-170 with WLR primers. Barrel lasted a long time, over 2k rounds.

7.5 twist barrels were very custom orders at the time, but I'll use 7.5 twist when rebarreling.

I have run 7.7, 7.5 and 7 twists in 6mm Creed and a 7.5 and 7.7 in .243 with 105-115s and they worked great. Using 7 twist Osprey barrel prefits from PVA now and works great with 108 ELDs and 110 ATips. That said i know people who used 8 twist with 115 DTACs and they shot great too. I like to go a little faster.
