243 Win rate of twist.

ok i want to get into long range shooting and i think the 243 is a good caliber to use. the next thing i need to know is what rate of twist should i use in order to shoot long range.i know i need a faster rate of twist to shoot heavier bullets but how fast do i need. thanks

If you are just getting into it, get a 9" twist and shoot 105 gr bullets.

Some will tell you to get a 8" or 7.5" and shoot the longer 111 to 115 grain bullets, but there are spin issues and many bullets will come apart at those spin rates - the 8" and 7.5" twists are not for beginners.

CAtman,
Hows it going you old dog?? I still keep updated over at SC glad things have worked out so well for you and rug rattus!!

I shoot the 1-8 in a Kreiger with my 243 and I am shooting the 105 Lapuas and they shoot great!! My son has a 1-8 twist on his 6-250 an his is a Pac Nor supermatch and a 3 grove and he has had problems only with the 105 AMAXs. Everything else shoots great in his too.

I have talked to several guys who have the 1-7.5 Kreigers and they are shooting the 115 Bergers with no problems. Lilke you said I have also heard where guys were having problems but I belive they were all with the 1-7 twists rifles trying to shoot the 117s. The school of thought now seems to be the 1-7.5 is just fine for the longer and heavier bullets and some of the 1-8s will also shoot them just fine.

If your going to say with the 105 class bullets the 1-9 is a good choice too. Also if you go with a 1-9 look at the 95gr match kings from Sierra. They are suppose to really shoot well too.

I have two 1-8" twist Broughton bbls. that shoot the 105's great and the 115's equally well as long as I either use a bullet with a longer bearing surface, or keep the speed up.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

My 7.5 tiwst Schneider works great with the 115 DTACs. I send them out about 2985fps. I have some friends sending them out quite a bit faster who haven't had any problems. I'd say figure out what bullet you plan to use and go from there.
