.243 which gun

I know this might not fit in the bench rest theme of this forum but you guys are the accuracy experts.

I am thinking about getting either a Savage 14 Classic or a Remington 700 BDL.

Any advice would be appreciated as to which gun for .243 in terms of accuracy out of the box and general usability.

I think the twists are both between 9.15 and 9.25 for these guns.

I have a Rem 700 VLS in .243 and it works very well. The only Savages I've had experience with had horrendous triggers. The new Accu-trigger is supposed to be better and they are supposed to be very accurate out of the box. Tikka is supposed to be a bit higher quality than either the Rem or Savage.

The Savage should cost you less, then the Rem and Tikka.

I have a Tikka M595 in .243 and it shoots well. I would never swap it for a Remington, except maybe for a M24) or a Savage. My choice would be the Tikka T3 Stainless or a Weatherby Vanguard Sub-Moa stainless over a rem a savage. I would advise going to a gunshop and checking these rifles out before making your decision and then maybe go with what your heart tells you.

good luck

i would look at and handle them all and see what one you like. all are pretty good. the american made savage with the accutrigger are good shooting guns. if you decide later that you want a heavy barrel, different caliber, it is easily done by swapping a barrel on a savage. the last stevens .243 i had averaged .75 groups at 100 yards, with some groups much better. and now it's a 6.5x284. cliffe

I have had 700 BDL's

I am looking for the information that you don't see by touching them in the store.

I do like the barrel changing aspect of the Savage. If it didn't have the user barrel change capability I would have already bought another Remington just because I have been happy with them before.

People are starting to post elsewhere that the Savages are not better them Remington. I am wanting to know if that is actually true or not.

If the guns are close to equal that barrel swapping ability will sell me on Savage.

I have a savage model 16 in .243 win. I like it a lot, and the best thing is when you wear out the barrel can change it to whatever you want, as its got the standard bolt face and easy to switch barrel. and its as accurate as anything out there.
