.243 to .243 AI

So I'm going to rechamber my 243 to AI. My question is this, Do I need to set up my reamer rigid? I have a floating reamer holder but I cant see how that would make for a very accurate chamber. Seems like a guy would need a really long pilot if using a floating reamer. anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would do it floating personally. That way the reamer will follow the existing chamber, which needs to be dialed in dead nuts! If you go rigid, and are off slightly, the reamer becomes a boring bar. Not good! You could also pre-bore the back of the chamber slightly, at the same angle as the reamer, to give a nice starting point for the reamer. Make sure your reamer holder floats freely. Set the barrel back a turn or 2 and use the floating holder.

Most think it's easy to do. It's not. It takes skills that are not used when starting with a new blank. Every barrel is different. Skipping over how to setup the barrel it's best to cut enough off to get a complete new neck in the chamber. Otherwise you'll have different diameters, Then lengthen the threads. Which BTW won't be concentric with the chamber. Just one of the many issues when doing remodeling work.
