243 target ammo

I plead senility, but the truth is I got myself in a jam. I have a new Remington 700 VLS 243 Winchester. The gun has the trigger worked and the barrel bedded, so I can shoot stock class.

I was heading to the range today, and the 3 boxes of hand loads I had for break in and hopefully use in the match was 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint, NOT the 95 grain Ballistic Tips I wanted.

I can use the 55 grain bullets to break in the barrel, but I don't think the 55 grain bullet will cut it the April Groundhog shoot. We shoot at 100, 200, 300 & 500 yards.

The bottom line is my reloading barn is useless until I can get someone to cut the trees away before I even start the clean up process.,That line of storms nailed us hard Monday. Luckily no damage to the roof)

I know this is a long shot, but I was hoping someone that owns the same rifle I have might give me some info on 243 win factory match ammo that shoots well in their rifle?

I know, all rifles are different, but I don't mind taking a chance. I have always had excellent luck with Nosler Ballistic Tips in every caliber from 22-250 to 30-06.

I'm sure there are other companies that specialize in target ammo only.

Any info would be great. I have no expectations of being competitive, but I really want to shoot in the match, since my IR5050 and ARA friends host the shoot.

All of my time is going into getting ready for the rim fire season, and I haven't even got my Anschutz back from a total rebuild. Luckily my Sporter is ready for all weight classes since I mounted a 6 x 20 VX III on it. When my ARA rifle gets back it's going to be a mad dash finding the best Eley ammo.

please feel free to email me.

I don't know about companies specializing in target ammo. I tried several different brands in my .243 Rem 700 VLS. The best shooting were the Federal varmint loads using the 70gr Speer TNT followed by the Hornady 58gr V-Max. In Heavier bullets the Winchester Combined tech with the 95 gr NBTs and Hornady light magnum loads in 100gr spire point.

I've been using the 70gr Nosler Ballistic Tip,NBT) to good effect in the matches here out to 500 yards. Hornady makes a load that may work. It runs 3400 FPS and my match load was around 3360. I don't see a factory load using the 87gr V-Max or the 80 or 90gr NBTs. Cheaper Than Dirt used to have just about everything made though it seems the selection is getting smaller.

You didn't say what your twist was but I would guess its 1 in 9 I would recommend the Hornady 105gr A-Max #24562 or the Nosler 85gr Partitions the A-Maxs are available at Midway USA most of the time.

Even if it is a 9 twist I very seriously doubt it will sabilize a 105 A-max. I know an 87 V-max with 40.2 grains of H4350 works well. Very Well!

Look up the Cor-bon custom shop. They should be able to get you what you need, but be prepaired to spend some $$
Good luck
