243 savage 12 LPV vs Ruger Precision rifle 243

I am having a hard time on deciding what rifle to get I am set on the 243. I would like to use it to shoot 600-800 yards varmints target and crap of the like. I am split between the Savage 12 LPV and the Ruger Precision rifle. I think they both look cool and have heard they are just about as accurate with hand loads. I want your opinion.

Snipershide, 65 pages of feedback on the Ruger: http://www.scout.com/military/snipers-hide/forums/5514-bolt-action-rifles/13955138-new-ruger-precison-bolt-action-rifle

Have any of you shot the 243 version of the Ruger or know of anyone who has shot it? What do you/they think of it? Oh and thanks Mr. Harris for posting that link lots of good info there. I talked to Ruger and they said they are 6 weeks out. Who thinks the Savage 243 Low profile varminter shoots any better at long distances?

I am a Savage fan. That said I do have a 77 Ruger in 411 Hawk that is a very nice rifle. The reason I like Savage so much is because of the easy changing of barrels. If you were to give me a Savage in 243 the first thing I would do is to pull off the barrel and rechamber it to 6-284 win., and I do have a reamer for it. I have 3 of them now. The 2 I have played with both are tack drivers with 70 gr. SMK bullets, but I`m want a longer range rifle, and to get past 600 yards. you need high BC bullets, i.e., heavy for cal bullets.

Well I do have a 6.5 creed moor for the longer range it is a 12 LRP. I am thinking of the 243 because I have the 243wssm and it is damn near impossible to find brass and when I do it is very pricey. I have seen 243win brass and ammo all over the place. I like the savages too for the self barrel change ability....I'm no gunsmith. So that is a big benefit. From what I understand the Ruger precision rifle has an AR style barrel nut so switching out a barrel is a 45min job.

Neither rifle will drive itself.

Build a custom switch barrel rifle that will have re-sale value if you get tired of it!

jimmy,

Why not a Savage in 6BR in 8 tw. better accuracy and better brass. It will do anything you want to do.

grab a ruger precision rifle it will do what you need and be more adjustable for your needs. Also prefit barrel are being made just like the savage. plus you can use PMAGS which are way cheaper than AICS

No its a barrel nut type system but with a recoil lug directly on the barrel. Look on the snipershide they have great video on upgrades for the Ruger PR.

I am going pick one up, with a shot out barrel when one comes around. Thinking it would be sweet in a 7mm-08 with the 140 Berger vlds

saw-tooth-jimmy,
You can look 6 BR on this site, it was called 6mm BR. com when it started. NO brass forming, get Lapua 6BR brass and load. The 6BR can run close to 243 speeds with 8 to 10 gr less powder. The 6BR imp's will require fire forming. You need to look up info on 6BR before doing anything! I have a few articles on this sight, look them up.

Eric32 do you know if th Ruger uses the same style barrels that all ARs use?

It does not use AR barrels.

It uses a Savage style barrel but, along with a barrel with a flange like an AR (but it's not compatible with an AR). It's innovation is that the outside of the barrel nut is also threaded (to the same specs as an AR upper receiver) so it can take AR handguards.
