243 for F-Class and Bench Rest Shooting

Curious if you do, have or would consider using a 243 for F-Class / bench rest shooting? When I hear of someone having or using a 243 I just think of a small deer rifle. Your thoughts?

I dont know about F Class But in 1k highpower John Whidden used a straight 243 with 105 bergers (hunting) to win the 2010 long range nats.

I believe the 243 is one of the finest cartridges ever developed - fun to shoot by virture of it's mild recoil, easy to reload, capable of sub moa accuracy, a true duel purpose hunting cartridge (i.e. deer and varmints). I have three of them and have been shooting the cartridge since 1966. Two of my factory rifles shoot in the sub 1/2 moa range with reloads.

However I do believe if you were considering a serious target cartridge only, there are probably much better choices such as the 6mmbr by virture of it's inherent better accuracy potential and longer barrel life. I'm not a bench rest shooter but the one's I know all shoot the 6mmbr with outstanding results.

You might also consider the easily formed 6mm Super LR. It could be described as a .243 with two minor flaws corrected. Those flaws are the 20° shoulder and short neck. [br]

I really like the .243 for target shooting, I wouldn't be any more accurate with any other round and it's also a great dual purpose round for long range PD/Coyote/pig shooting.

I have a Rem 700 VLS .243 Winwith a Lilja 12 twist that I have been using in 400 & 500 yard varmint competitions for a while. Best finish 6th out of 60 and usually upper 1/3rd. I used 70 and 80gr Nosler Ballistic Tips between 3200 & 3350 fps.

While not everyones choice, it works very well indeed on many things, up to rather large "deer".

The 243 is fairly normal use on everything truck gun here. Mostly because that is the rifle they have on hand at the time shooting needs to be done. Many rifle owners here, not many rifle "loonies'. Some may own not any other rifle.
