243 ackley twist rate

Hey guys got a few questions, would a 1-9 twist 243 ai stabilize 105 hybrids and vld? I have had several 243 1-8 and a 243 ai 1-8 and all were fine, but now i need to replace a remage barrel and in a quandary. I can get a 26" varmint in 1-9 or a 28" bull 1-8. If i go the bull route i will have cut down to 24" and recrowned m40a3 style. The current rifle is a 24" bull, 243 win, that i did this way. I don't mind 26" and prefer varmint contour, but not sure if a 9 twist would work. I know some guys can get some 105s to stabilize in factory 9 1/8 twist. Should be able to get 3100 easy with 26" 243ai and 105 bullets, think it would stabilize or am i better off just getting the 8 twist?

That all depends on what accuracy you expect and how long the 105gr bullets are. It isn't the weight of the bullet but how long it is. IMHO go with 8 twist!

I have 2-243Ack one is a Shilen 8 twist the other is a factory sendero barrel with a 9-1/4 twist. Now the 8 twist will stabilize a 115 Berger good enough to hunt with and shoot every 105-107gr bullet I've shot very well. The 9-1/4 shoot the 95 Bergers great and the 105 marginal and since it shoots the 95 great I didn't even try the 105's anymore. Personally I would go with an 8 just so I wouldnt have to wonder.

According to Berger's program 1 in 7 1/2 is about as fast a rate as use can use for those bullets.

I went with a 1 - 7.5 Twist in order to stabilize the 115 gr. Seems to work well so far but I only tried the Nosler RDF 115 so far.

If your shooting in Illinois, no it won't stabilize the 105s real well. At 4000 and above, you'll be ok. I'm at 1000'asl and my 9 twist won't quite shoot the 105s consistently well. I'd go with an 8 twist for 115 grain bullets or lighter.

I have 6mm Rem AI that is pretty much an equivalent to a 243 W AI. When I built it, my gunsmith told me to go with the 1:9 so we did.. It shoots the 105-107s exceptional well. A lot of people have told me I need a minimum 8" twist. I don't know if the extra 50-100s fps from a 6mm Rem AI makes that much of a difference or not. luck, Tim

I have a 6-06AI, 6WSM, 6MachIV, as well as a 6RUM in 14 twist and they all shoot up to 105s no problem, I do have to send them at least 4000fps to stabilize, this out to 300- 400 yards maybe 500 further than that I don't know I have never tried. My 243AI 12 twist will shoot 90gr no problem.

Holy necro threads batman, lol. Just a 7yr update, went with an 8tw varmint, burned it down a 5yrs ago, sold action and just run accuracy international and badger actions.

243DH,

Thanks for tagging back in even though you started the thread a while ago. Not everyone pays attention to the follow up but I know I enjoy reading about the ending you found.

:)
