243 55gr Loads???

I know the norm these days is fast twist and heavy bullets. Well, I'm gonna go the other way and try to find a 55gr load for my Savage 243. This rifle is a model 14 Savage and has a 1in9.25 twist. This is one of my calling rifles and I wanted to try a 55gr NBT or 55gr Varmageddon and go for speed. I feel at hunting distances the 55gr can be pushed fast and be flat out to 300-400yds. What powders are best suited for the light bullets in the 243? I know I will have to jump these bullets abit as I know my factory chamber is abit long but I will work with that. Thanks for any loads that might be helpful.

I run my 6BR with 55 NBTs at 3920 fps out of a Hart 26" 1/14 barrel. Splendid accuracy and kills like lightning. I'm pretty sure your 243 will be some kind of impressive. Sure like to know what you end up with!

I used H-414 with the Nosler 55BT it was very accurate and right at 4000fps from my Ruger I will never forget the first pd shot with it at 100 yards I went up to look at him,
not really anything left to see.I think the Nosler with the solid base would be a good choice for coyotes as you will have something left to penetrate and kill the coyote.

I shot quite a few coyotes with my first coyote rifle, a 243 Savage with 55 grain ballistic tips and H414. It also worked well in a Kimber I had. I ran mine over 4100. Extremely flat shooting and drops them dead in their tracks. One deadly/fun combo

Sounds good guys! I do have some H4895, RL15, XMR4064 and enough H414 to load about 20rds. I am getting ready to order some supplies and was going to pick up some powders that would be good candidates.

H414, Varget, and for pure speed, H380 have all worked well for me.

If your shooting in Winter and Summer, I'd give the nod to Varget if you have it, or H4895 if you've got that.

55g Nosler BT & Varmageddon.
49g H380, 2.650" col, 3886 fps chronied, 7 shots = .450" @ 100 yds
22" Savage sporter 1/9.25" twist.
Both the above bullets shot/print as twins.
Thank me later.

55g Nosler BT & Varmageddon, often a barrel will prefer one over the other. Amazing that the Vam will often outshoot the std BT, flat base vs BT thing, maybe?

I kinda figured that might be a possibility so I was gonna grab a couple hundred of each.

5spd, I don't why but I have had this hate for H380 for years. Maybe cuz I had heard it as being "THE" powder for the 22-250 for years and never has worked for me in the 22-250. I know we are talking about the 243 in this case but I'm trying to get through my hate and talk myself into trying it.

Good luck. Probably wasting your time with that twist. You'll be hurling a 55 gr pill at extreme speed. You need a slower twist.

My factory-barreled Ruger .243 varmint rifle loves Reloader 15 and 58 V-Maxes above all else tried - which unfortunately was an extensive list.

I found that Sierra Blitzkings were better than the Noslers...the flat base helped loading the bullet a bit further out.
