22x47 Lapua?

Thinking of putting together a fast twist .22. Considering the 22x47 Lapua? Any real advantage over the 22-250?

John

I think the main advantages of the 47 case are the longer neck allowing you greater flexibility and the option to chase the lands as the throat wears, slightly more case capacity and a stronger case overall. Main downside is it's a reload only option, if that's of any concern to you. Brass a little more expensive but should last longer if you're going to push the pressures. Atb rf

I have a 8 twist 22x47 Lapua and I like it. I have a sporter 26" barrel and shoot 80 gr Hornady A-max bullets with h4831 powder, my longest kill on groundhogs are 504 and 510 yards and a deer at about 100 yards the Hornady bullet preforms very well on groundhogs and deer. If I had it to do all over again I would do a 8 twist 220 swift or something in the swift class, the only negative with the 22x47 is that dies are hard to get and are expensive.

I did a 22x47 when the 6.5x47 Lapua brass first arrived I wanted case capacity close to the 22-250 with the quality of Lapua brass. Lapua was not making 22-250 brass at the time or I would have gone a straight 22-250. I used the standard 6.5x47 L dies and used smaller bushings to neck the brass down in 3 steps and used the same die for full length sizing fired rounds with great results.

I used a 1-8" twist barrel and 80 g JLKs and it was a great gun.

Go to the home page, scroll down the left column to "22/250" and click. There is a good discussion at the end of the article about the relative merits of the cartridges there.

I shoot the 22/250 Rem, 22/250 AI and have a Savage PTA with 8-twist Krieger barrel in 22X47 L. The 22X47 L shoots very well, but I really don't see a big enough advantage to it to warrant the extra costs involved. Good Shooting! Vic

I have a 22x47L varmint rifle with a 28" barrel which commonly shoots 3/8- 1/2" 5 shot groups using the 75Amax. Occasional 1/4" groups are not unusual. I had it built it about a year before the 22-250 Lapua brass came available. If you can have ready to go Lapua 22-250 brass, why mess with the more expensive 6.5 x 47 brass?..... which also requires case reforming and Redding custom class dies. It's also nice to be able to use a variety of domestic brass if you are doing more casual shooting.

Unless somebody who has both rifles (and fires Lapua brass in both) can tell me that the 22x47L is noticeably more accurate, I'd go with the 22-250. I also never use the full powder capacity of the 22x47L, and keep the velocity of the 75Amax down to right about 3,400FPS to prevent excessive throat errosion. I bet the Lapua 22-250 case can do about 3,400FPS too. You could also opt to do a 22-250 improved case.
