22x47 Lapua Loads???

Texas

Silver $$ Contributor
I just took delivery of a new 22x47 Lapua. It's an 8 twist. I am looking to get some load advice. What powders are you using and what charge range are you in? I plan to shoot mostly 75 grain bullets but will also play around with some of the lighter bullets too. Any feedback would be great.
Thanks

Howdy !

My wildcat .22-35Rem would be very close in case capacity, to your notional .22-47L.

In a K & P 28" SS 1-8 5-groove, my favorite ( accuracy/field ) load was:

75 "A"-Max over 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Match = 3,420 fps

Same load w/ primer switch to FED LR Magnum Match = 3,500fps straight up

I tried a goodly amount of other sensible powder choices, and AA3100 out-shot them all.
Of course, other newer powders ( for example: " Superperformance " ) have been introduced since I did my load work-ups

Hope this helps !

Best of luck in your endeavors !!

Re: 22x47 Lapua Loads 3.0

Howdy, again.

I can only quote you load data for the .22-35Rem wildcat, when shot from a 24" Hart SS 1-14 5-groove....

I used the rifle for both local target shoots, and especially for use on the local " Soybeanus Digestus " population.
For 22+yr THE load was: 41.2gr WW760 and FED LR Magnum Match under Hornady 55SX.

I ended-up getting into the 500yd club on a 510yd groundhog kill. The prototype 55"V"-Max bullet I used was running out of steam @ that range; when counting-on a reliable kill just as I did for shorter range shots.

My point:
I prefer the 55SX over other .224" cal bullets like Sierra's 55 Blitkzing or anybodies poly-tipped 55's ( including "V"-Max ).
Notwithstanding.... you'd likely NOT be able to use the SX @ your obtainable vel level, and given a 1-8 barrel.

IMHO -
For 600 and inside..... the Sierra 65 SPBT could put you solidly out in the far corner of the external ballistics envelope, w/o having to
reach for a 75.

My math shows 3,695fps Mv on a Sierra 65 = 510 ft lb @ 600, while flatter than a 75 "A"-Max @ vel a .22-47L could impart.

I found my notes from 4 years ago on a 22X47L I owned. Mine was a 7 twist and i shot 80 grain Bergers and Sierras in it. RL-22 proved to be the powder in my rifle. There was a node between 38.6-39.2 and I achieved speeds of 3,495 FPS. Start around 38.0 and go up in .2 increments, Something will show itself on paper. This barrel was on a switch barrel rifle I bought and was shot out from previous owner hunting PD's out west, and I took some time to play with it before getting rid of barrel.

I have a 22x47L with a 26" Krieger sporter barrel and I load 39.5 grs. of H4831 with 80 gr. Hornady Vmax bullets velocity is 3174 FPS and accuracy is fair about 3/4" at 100 yards. I am going to try IMR 4831 and Reloader 17 the Reloader 17 seems to be the favorite powder of the guys at McDonald Sportsmen Club that have the 22x47L.

Howdy !

IMHO -
Drag's & 40 X's load data hew towards the general trend I've read about .22-47L load data.... the powder charges end-up being
in the high 38 -39gr range; with the powders shooters typically made use of for this chambering.

Load data I'm used to seeing for things like .220 Swift and .22-250AI ( also my .22-35 ) seem indicate their " useful " case capacity
allows powder charges for these chamberings runs a bit higher... into the low 40's; and up.

Thanks for clarifying!

Sorry to disagree!
Comparing a 22-250 to a 220 Swift is ridiculous. It's like saying a 222 and a 22-250 are basically the same.

The 220 Swift is just as accurate if not more so. Regardless of what the reloading books say it can put SPEED and accuracy in a quality built rifle that will shake your nervous system to a frazzle! You will not believe just how good it is till you try one!
Please don't build one on a 24 inch barrel, this beast needs room to RUN !

Give it a decent action, quality barrel of at least 26 inches, keep it cool, sit back and be AMAZED!!

Disagree all you want.

Do you know what "AI" means? Are you aware that the 22-250 AI (spoiler alert: Ackley Improved) is not the same as the standard 22-250 Remington and in fact uses 220 Swift loading data? When did the OP ask about the accuracy of the 220 Swift or your opinion of optimum 220 Swift barrel length? Which reloading books state that the the 220 Swift is not fast and accurate?

Sheeesh...
