22ppc

The 22 PPC is great shooting the 53 gr VMAX with a 12 twist barrel at prairie dogs out to 500 yards !! SUPER ACCURATE

I enjoy my 22ppc Cooper M21.
So far I have only used it for the factory Varmint class at our local Hunter Bench match’s but I do plan on trying it out on varmints with some 40s perhaps.I believe the Cooper is a 14 twist,so far I have only used the 50 Berger for the match’s.I plan on trying some 52 match grade stuff later, the Berger’s were good enough to win 1st a couple times so I never really deviated from them. Why mess with good luck, not trying to brag but that Cooper flat out shoots very well.

I have a Cooper 21 in .22 PPC also. It is extremely accurate with loads it likes. On my list of rifles to never sell. I think it is a bit more picky to find a great load than the 6mm PPC, but when you find what it likes - it is very consistent. I think it is near ideal in case capacity/velocity for a .22 varmint rifle. Kind of like a .222 Rem. Magnum with better accuracy.

I have a Sako L461 and a Cooper M21 in .22 PPC. They are very fine factory rifles, though quite different in design and implementation. The Cooper M21 in 6 PPC or .22 PPC are close to benchrest accuracy right from the factory. My .22 PPC over three years at our egg shoots has gone 85 straight eggs without a miss at 200 yards. My M21 6 PPC was actually more accurate but I got stupid and sold it. The Sako will consistently shoot 3/8" groups at 100 and, though I haven't shot it competitively yet, will certainly hold its own on eggs at 200 yards. The .22 PPC is a special cartridge in that it uses a case that was designed to hold, ignite and burn the proper load of powder for utmost efficiency. Most benchrest shooters will argue it may hold a bit too much powder for perfect performance, but that just may be a bonus for varmint hunters who can use a bit more fps and the acceptable accuracy of the full-length case. Due to the moderate powder capacity and case design, barrel wear is nowhere near the bigger .22s, though accuracy is usually better. I'm not aware that much work has been done with the .22 PPC using fast twists and heavy bullets, but don't see why it wouldn't be as good or better than the .223. With modern powders and 40-55 gr. bullets it is quite a joy to shoot.

I had a number of custom 22 PPC's. If you can find any WC844 for use with the 50-55g bullets, you will indeed be amazed. I won a benchrest match with 52g Remingtons with 25g of imr 4198 and a fed 205 primer, sako brass.

H335 with 50-55g bullets will give you some unbelievable barrel life shooting red hot barrels on dog towns. I typically shot a 50g Speer tnt, bltiz at 3550 on dog towns. Shooting p. dog heads at 300 was not unusual.

45g Hornady hornets ran out of gas around 275 with a MV of 3800, dogs just fell over...where is the fun in that?

Does any rifle manufacturer make production rifles in 22ppc?

Back in the mid 1990's, Ruger made both the 22PPC and 6PPC in their VT models. I owned one of the 22ppc's for about 6 months. To this day it was the most accurate "Factory" rifle that I have ever actually seen or shot. A collector came along one day and he still owns it. If you can find someone who will part with one you'll be a happy camper. WD

Edit: I believe Sako may have made a 22ppc for a limited time too. Not sure about that, as I don't remember seeing one, but hearing of them. WD

Sako did make a factory .22 PPC. Now days the only factory availability would be a Cooper or you could get a prefit barrel from several sources for a Remington , Remington clone or Savage action.

I have one of the Ruger 22PPC’s and have had it for several years but have never shot it.....one of these days just has never come! Once I thought about selling it but never got around to that either! Can anyone suggest a load/ or powder choices?

I have had success with IMR 8208, LT-30 & IMR 4895 with 40 to 52 grain bullets in my Cooper. I believe mine has a 1:14 twist rate barrel. I am not sure, but the Ruger versions may have had a 1:12 twist. Mine definitely shoots tighter groups with the lighter range of bullets.

I have a Sako sporter in 22PPC and a 6PPC, both were factory offering and original. They are repeaters. They both shoot very well. You can get on gunroker or like sites and find them if your watching for them.

I have a Sako 75 Heavy Varmint in 22 PPC and it is an excellent and a very accurate shooter! I use to shoot a "100. short" 22 PPC in competition with a Stolle Panda action. It was very accurate and fun to shoot as well. I liked it better than my 6 PPC . I don't shoot competition anymore and have I turned my Panda action into a 20 Beggs which a 220 Russian case necked down to 20 caliber. It is very accurate and a awesome prairie dog gun. I have recorded several prairie dog kills at over 800 yards with it!

I also have a Cooper 21 in 22 PPC, 1/14” twist I believe. Never tried any benchrest stuff other than the backyard shooting for fun. Never did any load progression either, nothing hot pretty much right out of the Hornady book. I was given some 50 gr moly coated v-max a while back, loaded them up (like I said not even close to warm - close to 3200 I believe) and started shooting. Bugholes at 100. It’s just a good shooting round.

I have one of the Sako A1 single shot heavy barrel rifles. It shoots great with Sierra 50g Blitz and H335.
I just was given 16lbs of AA2520. Has anyone used this powder in a PPC. Any suggested loads?

Mike

Im running aa2520 in a 20PPC and the results are fine, not spectacular. Shooting .5-.7MOA at 250yrds off of bipod and bag. Was not my first choice but I had 3lbs of it and got caught with my pants down like many have with the shortages of components. I think AA has a listing for 22ppc if that interests you.
