22PPC with 75 grain A-Max

I would like some advise on what powders will work well in this combo. I have heard that RL-15 is the powder to use. Is there another powder out there? I was thinking H4895 or Benchmark. Benchmark and H322 work very well in my 223 shooting the same bullets. Any thoughts?

If you would to share your load data with me please PM me. I will be sure to take necessary precautions when working up a load.

Thanks,
Mitch

You did not mention this in your post, but most of the 22ppc's I have been around were throated for light match bullets and slow twist's, you might want to check this in your rifle first, I shoot the 75 a-maxes in my .223 it's a fairly long high bc bullet as you know, if your rifle is throated for the lighter bullets, you may have way too much bullet in the case. Just a couple of things to keep in mind.

As 500x said, unless your 22ppc has a faster twist than the standard 1-14, the 75 A Max is questionable, especially that particular bullet with it having such a long O.A.L.

I'd probably start with H-335. Varget and R-15 should work as well. H-4895 is a little faster yet as is 322, which is too slow for the heavies.

This rifle is set up to shoot the heavier 22 cal bullets. It wears an 8 twist barrel which was cut with a reamer for the heavies. It also has a 26-28" barrel. For some reason I have not had a lot of success with RL15.

Hodson's web site is listing H335 and Benchmark right next to eachother on the "powder burn rate chart". I think I'll give 4895 a try. Maybe also the IMR 8208XBR.

If you haven't tried Varget I would recommend that before the faster powders mentioned. Especially since you have the long barrel. 25.5gr has been mentioned as a load for 80gr SMK's in 22ppc used in a AR15 by Glen Zediker.
Usually anything faster than 4895 is going to show excess pressure before you reach a good velocity. His AR was running 2900fps using Varget.

N140 start at 23.0 gr. and work up.
H322 start 21.5 gr. and work up.

Should be able to hit about 3040 fps. with a 27" barrel with these two powders.

I have a 22" .22PPC 1 in 8 twist being built at this time. It is my plan to shoot the 75 A-Max with this rifle and I plan to begin with Varget.
