22lr benchrest barrel length

Hey Guys and Gals , What is the ultimate length of barrel for 22lr benchrest competition?

I am not a professional, but from what I've seen depending on the class, weight of the gun a lot of them end up around 25". Shorter on the ones that are really restricted on weight down to 20". There are some good write ups in the 6br "guns of the week" section.

I run a 26", longer barrels tend to be a bit more consistent but that is just my opinion. You wont gain any velocity after about 16" or so and you actually lose some on longer barrels.

Rimfire benchrest barrels should be cut and crowned is at the smallest and roundest place in the barrel.

That said, if you find the smallest and roundest place somewhere in the middle or somewhere that will make the barrel less than 23 inches I would look for another blank.

Absolutely correct. You could give 3 different barrel blanks of the same MFG to one smith for finishing and according to how they slugged, end up with 3 different lengths.
