22cal F-Open Anyone?

Anyone shooting F-Open with a .22cal round other than the .223R? Am thinking mostly mid-range. Just read an interesting article on blowing out the .204 to .223 which gives about 5gr more powder than the .223R. Shooter got about 3125fps with 69gr SMKs. Probably around 3000fps with 80gr and 2850fps with 90gr. Might make an interesting round.

I have a 22 BR set up as a long range coyote rifle. Shooting the 80SMK at 3000 on the nose. Shoots pretty damn good to 800.

I'd be willing to put one together for f open.

"Froggy2" on here is shooting a 22BR using 90gr bullets in comp. I'm shooting 80gr bullets in a 1:8 twist 223 Rem in our club F-class open 600yd matches. It is fun to shoot as no recoil. Why not a fast twist 220 Beggs, 22BR, or 22 PPC which would have better brass. The 22 cal bullets have a hard time beating the better BC bullets of the bigger cals.

Just a caution here about the 22 cal in F-Open.

I shot a 22BR in F-O for a couple of years and learned that the 90 grain VLD really weren't consistent in the winds. The BT's were far better but Berger discontinued those. I couldn't maintain a consistent vertical in the light bubbly winds out to 600 meters. In calm winds I could drive tacks at 600 meters but once the light winds came up I had real issues.

Secondly, in the 1 in 7 twist barrels we were blowing up bullets constantly even down to the 223 velocities once the barrels aged and got a little rough. Finally I quit using the 90's totally.

Some are having good success but I never did on a consistent basis like I can using the 6mm bullets in 6mmBR's etc.

Strange! My barrel is 'aged' and no blown jackets! And the 'bubbly winds'.....not an issue!!
