22BR shooting Berger 85.5 Hybrids

Did I screw up?? After reading the forum above fast twists for 22cals.shooting the heavies in a 1 in 7”twist coming apart I started asking questions, decided that 1in 7” was going to cause potential problems so I ordered a Bartlein 7.5” twist . Anyone done this before and, I know , try it and find out , but am I in the ball park or do you think I jumped the fence? If you have done this OR have thoughts on it ....powders to try ??? Thank you in advance.

Thousands upon thousands of .223 80-90 gr. bullets have been shot from 7" twist barrels without issue. Berger bullets are not known for blowing up and after shooting thousands of the newer
Sierra 90gr. bullets can attest to their ability to survive the trip to the target just fine. Nothing wrong with a 7" twist in .223.

That's not exactly true. Berger's 90 VLD is actually well-known for blowing up in barrels with twist rates faster than 7.0 and having 0.218" bores. In a barrel that has routinely blown up Berger 90 VLDs and Hornady 88 ELDMs, I have yet to blow up a Sierra 90 Matchking. Sierra's jackets in heavy .224" bullets seem to be much tougher than Berger's. Likewise, the 85.5 Berger seems to be holding up at velocities and twist rates that would have almost certainly caused jacket issues with the 90 VLDs.

At 65 degrees, 500 ft. elevation, a 7.5 twist barrel is going to be just a tick slow with velocities of ~ 3000 fps for the 85.5s. Berger's Twist Rate Calculator suggests the 85.5 would be giving up ~2% of its intrinsic BC at that twist rate. In order to prevent jacket failures, this is more or less comparable to running the 90 VLDs out of a 7.0-twist barrel at around 2850 fps. They shoot just fine, even if you're giving up a teensy amount of BC. IMO - it's not a good idea to grossly over-spin long heavy .224" bullets. Use the minimum twist rate necessary to net you close to the full BC, but no more.

I held that position myself for a spell. Wrong as wrong can be. Some barrels seem to get by while others do not. In addition I would suggest there are more over spun bullets than there needs to be.

You did good. You could have even went 1:8. I would doubt you have problems and that set up is gonna be a lot of fun for you. Quit worrying and start shooting!

I used a 7.2 twist and 90 VLD’S for a few years. Never had an issue, even running them @ 3200
