22BR question

That will depend upon how picky you are about accuracy and what barrel you have and how hot your loads are and etc... I have had 2 Shilen SSMs that went well over 900 before the accuracy fell off to the point I felt a need to replace them. Had I been competing with that rifle I might have changed barrels a bit sooner.

You are saying you burned out your barrel in 900 rounds with a 22br?? It barely burns more powder than a 223 ackley so I have a tough time envisioning one going in less than 2500-3000 rounds.

I guess I will find out soon. I take delivery of my new fast twist 22br tomorrow. It has a 25.5 inch brux 1-8 twist remington varmint contour barrel screwed into a 700 action. It will have a jewell trigger and sit in a manners T2 stock. I plan to start with lapua brass, fed 205Ms, Varget and 80gr Nosler hpbts. I'll post a report within a few weeks on it.

JP......can't wait for your report. I am shooting a 1 in 8 twist Kreiger with 28 1/2 grains of Varget with 75 grain Berger. I now have 900 round and it still shoots. Jim

My 12 twist stainless Shilen, fed a steady diet of 28.5 grs. of N322 with 50 & 53 gr. bullets is still going strong at a documented 1850 rds. Minimal firecracking in the throat.

I have been shooting 22br's for almost 10 years now and they last ,the first one I did was on a used take off barrel from a varmint rem 700, I have over 2000 rounds on this one and it still shoots 1/2 moa @ 100.

The other one was built on a light varmint stainless barrel and I have over 2500 on this one and it will still shoot quarter inch groups pretty consistently.

They have to be good for at least 3000-4000 imo before they really go south.

My first 22BR using a Kreiger 1 in 7 twist HV contour shooting 90 Bergers went south at approx 1100 rounds. I think that twist rate affects how fast the barrel goes. If you are running slow twist barrels then they might last a long time but the fast twist barrels don't seem to last as long.

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but out of curiosity (since I don't compete) but have an interest in maintaininmg accuracy over time, why is it that at 1100 - 1300 rds though a Match Grade 22br barrel, that they are going south on accuracy? I wouldn't expect 28.5 gr of VV or any other powder to eat barrels even in a 1:7 twist, Please educate me. Thx to all.

Hi,
22 B/R shooting my 3rd Barrel with 1 in 9 twists . and always got at least 2500 out of my Barrels, using 29-30 grains of Vit n 150 and 75 amaxs, hope this helps

My 22BR is fed 80g Burger VLD's 30.5 g VV150, CCI 450 primers, @ 3200 fps ,she is at recorded 1853 rounds and just shot 98/99 at 600mts last Saturday.
She has run hot all her life the barrel is a 1:8 hart 28"
I do not clean her till she tells me to, and when she needs a clean it shots a high 80's, takes 10 rounds to bring her back on song. Note:- ( this is the only barrel I do not clean )
