22BR Norma

ab_bentley

I fix stuff, sometimes....
Anyone here shoot the 22BR extensively? I am in the process of building one and I know how I want it to go but I'd like to see other builds if possible.

Specs on mine:
PTG Reamer with No Turn Neck and .050" Freebore 1-2* throat
223 Remington Sporter Contour 24"
1-12" (for 55gr and lighter)
Remington Mdl 7 action
BC Alaskan Ti Stock
PTG Bottom Metal
Shilen Standard Trigger
Warne Rings
Weaver 1pc steel base
Leupold 3-9x33AO Matte
DuraCoat Black with some wired Pink camo pattern.

My reamer will be here this week and I will bang out the barrel, I am going to get this baby to feed too.

Any pictures of your 22BRs would be nice.

Here's my 8 twist .22BR for coyote hunting. They don't like it. ;D Shooting the 75 A-max at 3000 fps. Very quiet with the suppressor.

Have or had 2. Both set up as bench shooters. One 16" Douglas SS 1-8 twist straight pipe barrel on a Savage left hand repeater action mounted in a rear grip SP stock set up as a single shot. Too much recoil for the type of shooting I was after.
The other is a Model 12 Savage single shot action mounted on a Joel Russo A5L stock in "San Francisco Camo".
26" Pac Nor 3 groove 1-8 twist straight pipe is SS.
No gouged up brass or feeding problems as single shots and no chasing brass either. Both deadly accurate.
Both barrels cut with a PT&G .254 no turn neck reamer with zero freebore. Loaded round necks measure .2515" to .252".
Lapua or Norma 6 BR brass necked down to 22 caliber. All resized with Forster Precision Bushing Bump dies.
Shoulders pushed back .001 to .002 and the necks bushing sized. 25 to 30 reloads and the brass is still going strong. All loads are built with the bullets stuffed .010 into the lands. All mid range loads so the brass isn't hammered.
5 shot groups with 55 grain Bergers that can be covered with a dime are the norm. Loading can be kinda touchy so you go up 1/10 th. at a time or you get pressure signs "real fast".
If you start off with zero freebore you can go to heavier bullets as the throat gets longer. And it will, sometimes faster that you expect.

I LOVE THE 22 BR!!! i have three and shoot two regularly. my twist are 8, 12, and 14. the 8 twist was the first and the least shot as i can only get 77 SMKS to print one hole groups and the mv is only 3100 fps. nice for targets but very wind sensitive when varmint hunting...my passion. next was a 12 tw rem contour kreiger and i earmarked it to shoot 60-64 gr bullets and it consistently one holed with 64 bergers and 63 cheeks. mv about 3350-3400 and once i learned to shoot it in the wind i "harvested" 24 consecutive ghogs before a miss. the 14 tw is a kreiger lv contour and was mated to a stiller lprb predator v action in a tommy shurley thumbhole laminate and it is the GUN! 50 and esp 55 gr bullets at 3600+fps are the ticket. it once shot 60 gr into one hole but a newer lot seems to have a bit longer bearing surface and don't shoot as well or as fast as the 55s. the 55s seat out further in the neck as i seat .020 into the lands and i wonder if your freebore is going to be too long unless you decide to jump. anyway, the 22 BR is my second favorite to shoot and you will like it.

Not good at photography but.
I have a rebarreled 40xb. The factory wood stock is one of my favorites., with the rail you can set it up for a bi-pod. My favorite from a varmint hunting bench is the Caldwell front bag, not the large one. You can find used 40 xb stocks at many price ranges. Surely one could be adapted to a model 7. Also have a Savage PTA in a Richards Micro fit Marks man stock . nice style also. Check Richards bargain page might find one that can be adaptive.

My 22 BR like 8208 XBR and any quality 50 to 60 gr varmint bullet. Settled on first guess load for development. Also i'm partial to any #7 Shilen contour. Have a Shilen 12 tw and a 9 tw.. Remington 6 br brass has shot well, don't know it's longevity but cheaper than Lapua if stubble across it. Mine is no turn nk and zero freeborn. Love the cartridge.

Thanks guys, I was hoping for a lightweight rig in there. I am trying to get mine in the 6-6.5lbs range. I was using a 20VT to cull deer but since I have the ability to make a lightweight BR I thought I would use it. Those 55gr VMax make a deer dead on the spot. I will post pics once I have the barrel in the lathe.

Adam if you get the Remington to feed please tell us all how you did it. I think there would be a lot more 6br based guns built if we could get rem actions to feed from the magazine.

I got a PPC to feed, used a 6.8SPC magazine and follower. I also know Mike Bryant had a big tutorial on making a BR feed and I'll probably rock that. Involves lots of trimming and rigging.

22br is one of my favorites ! 14 Twist Is great. Lots of varget, and a 52 cheek shoots one hole. Shilen # 5@ 26 inches. You wont believe how flat it shoots. May be better powders for it, but thats what I tried first. Was so good I never tried anything else ! pm me for the exact dose, and stick with lapua, or old 7br brass. I ththroated mine with my 22 250 reamer so no need to turn necks!

22BR, 1-12 twist which shoots anything from 40gr to 64gr bullets.

I have always maintained since owning one that if the 22BR was brought out as a commercial cartridge at the same time as the 22-250, the 22-250 would be obsolete (ish) now.

last point well taken. i am getting 3700+ fps in my 14 tw pushing 55 gr bergers with a lot less powder than my 22-250 needs to accomplish the same. how can this be? the br case seems to be more efficient and works safely at higher pressures...high pressure equals more velocity. cartridge propellants when sublimated waste a large amount of their potential energy. the 6BR case(the ppc and other short fat cases also) seem to be able to "harness" more of this energy.
