22BR Cases Won’t Come Out

Hi guys,

I’ve asked something like this before but I’m still puzzled by this.

I have a 22BR. It shoots very well.

New brass chambers tight. Not overly tight, it’s a good crush type of fit, what you would expect from a custom rifle.

After the first firing the brass extracts and ejects fine.

I neck size with a bushing neck sizer.

After the second firing the bolt will lift right up but it won’t come backwards. It’s like the brass is stuck in the chamber. Usually if I bump the bolt with my hand it will pop out.

Is this a sizing issue? Would a full length sizer cure this? Could it be something to do with the trigger/bolt assembly?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Thank you

Did you FL size the brass before the first firing?

Are there any marks on the cases indicating a rough chamber?

Sounds like the shoulder needs to be pushed back. Neck sizing only works for a bit then full length sizing needs to come into play. I neck size then body size as the brass gets tight in the chamber, like you have now.
Best bet is custom made dies made from YOUR fired brass out of your chamber.

Just guessing but does your rifle have a Remington Action? Sounds like little or no primary extraction to pop the brass loose and back. Also, put the neck sizing die away and get a properly sized FL sizing die that will reduce the base of the brass the proper amount. Harrell's Precision is a great place to get a semi custom die based on a piece of you fired brass.

Is it possible it's a Remington chamber and you rising Norma or Lapua brass? That brass is bigger at the back end then the Remington BR brass. If not, it's a sizing issue. New brass should fit. Maybe the dies don't match. I never neck size and only full length size with a .002 max shoulder bump. Matt

Can't top what's already been suggested. I use a Redding body die and collet die the necks but other ways work well also but shoulder bump .002 and resizing the case base are a must after 2 firings

By an overwhelming margin the number 1 cause for difficult extraction is the lack of clearance between the case and the chamber. There are multiple ways to arrive at this condition. 1. Dimensionally mismatched brass and chamber. The other is not FL sizing which leads to #1.
You should not have any resistance chambering new brass. Sounds like you're starting with an interference fit.

it’s a good crush type of fit

Not sure what you mean by a 'good crush type fit.' Crush to me implies a shoulder too far out or a bullet jamming hard into the rifling. Can you chamer and extract a loaded cartridge properly?

Thanks to all.

By crush fit I mean I can feel the bolt close on the brass vs an empty chamber. If that makes semse. It’s not tight, but you know it’s there.

I ordered a FL die to try and see if that cures it.

Thank you, but I had the reamer made from a dummy round using Lapua brass.

Interference fit?

Can you elaborate on that?

Thank you!

^^^^^ all of this ^^^^^^ and are you trimming after the initial neck down operation?

What is the length of your brass before the first firing?

Yep all brass was trimmed after necking it down.

I want to say it was 1.520 but I’d have to look. However I did trim all the brass.
