22BR brass turning question

A friend of mine has built a 22BR along with me and he just got his barrel back. He brought me over 100 pieces of new Peterson 6BR brass for me to turn the necks down for him. I have a copy of the reamer print used to make his barrel and it says the chamber neck is .253 and brass should be .248. My question is,... is that a "loaded round" dimension or run the mandrel in and turn to .248?? I tried 2 pieces at .248 and I get .250 with bullet pressed in.

.003" clearance is fine. If you had a ball micrometer, those necks would measure .013". Bullets vary some in diameter, but the overall diameter with bullet installed is the main thing.

EDIT: Be sure to check the brass length after sizing down. The brass has to go somewhere, and they usually get longer. Use the reamer print to tell you the max length.

Since you are turning necks, I would suggest you get a bushing sizing die, and not use a die that pulls that button back through.

I'm not sure what he's getting or got for dies I just offered to turn the necks since I have the stuff.
Max length on the print is 1.555

Did YOU turn the necks to .248 on the new brass? What specs do you get "loaded" without turning the neck?

Most chambers are cut about .020 LONGER than listed Max trim length. Don't trim till you need to! Bushing Bump dies won't pull the necks longer!
The reamer print listed measurements is "loaded round". Don't turn necks unless needed.

Sounds like your in an ok spot. Smart move cutting one then sizing and loading it. I run my 22br at .002 clearance of a loaded round. It would not hurt to go to 003 if you want. Whatever you do , remember brass flows. I always run my cases back over the neck turned after the first 4 firings and then again about every 5 or 6 firings . They will thicken back up.

I resized 2 pieces of his brass to 22BR with my Forster die. Run my 22 sizer mandrel through and then turned them to .248, reamer print specs "resize N.D. .248" right on it. With one of my bullets seated the loaded neck was .250.
After resizing the length only grew .003 longer so no trimming needed yet.

With a .253 chamber neck and a loaded round neck of .250, I'd forget about neck turning and concentrate on loading and shooting. ;) ;) BUT, if you feel you need to turn necks, go for it.
I started turning necks because the chamber neck and the case neck were too tight and caused problems. Went with a larger neck custom reamer and forgot about turning.
Put the neck turning gear away and went shooting. :D:D
