22br 75 Amax, when rl15 and varget don't work

Need some suggestions, I've been poking around looking for powder choices for this combo. Nothing better than shotgun patterns with varget and rl15. My first priority is accuracy then speed, something not too temp sensitive would be great but not a requirement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I'm using it as a squirrel gun and am pretty stuck on the amaxs for fear of ricochets. I've tried 450's 400's br4's and wolf sr primers. The 450's gave me great velocity but the groups shrunk by half with the br4's. I've tried every seating depth from .010 in to .010 out, with a seeming sweetspot around .060 out but no consistancy. I've tried all the regular trouble shooting with the rig save for re-bedding or re-barrelling.

i use n150 in my 22br with 75 gr A_amx, i have found that 30.5gr low es 12fps and muzzel vel of 3150fps from 28'' 1in8.5 twist barrel

Went and picked up some N150 and fed 205m's, also re-bedding the action, the more I looked at the bedding job the more I couldn't take it anymore, it took me 3 hrs to get enough clearance :'(. Hopefully my impatience doesn't bite me in the ass, the only release agent that I could find was pam.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I figure I would just start around 28 grains and work up. I let you know how I goes. I also loaded up some of the "best" loads I've already come up with so we'll see how the new bedding job is assuming I can get it out tomorrow morning.

I would try another bullet. I built a rifle just for this bullet. Shot great on until I used up all my old bullets and ordered new ones. Went from 1/4 inch gun to 3/4 inch. Hear the same from others.........some lots won't shoot. Switched to Berger and Sierra and boom.....1/4 inch gun again.

If N150 doesn't work to your satisfaction, go buy a pound of IMR 8208XBR. Start with 27.5 grains & Wolf SR primer (KVB223) or their KVB223M if you get cratering on the regular SR.

8028XMR amazes me. I've tried it in two 6mm cartridges (with Berger 105VLD), 308 for Palma (Sierra 2156) & even 223 (Sierra 80 MK) for service rifle & it's as good as or better than anything else I've ever used before.

Work loads up carefully though as it's really dense...

With N150 beware that there is a difference between lots, probably with most other powders too. When I first tried it with an old batch of powder, 30.2 gr worked pretty good with 80's. When I bought a new batch of powder, I had to drop all the way down to 29.4 gr. Work your loads up carefully. I did 3 shot groups at a time to narrow it down. With 75's, my guess would be to start around 29 gr. and work up in 3/10 gr at a time. Your rifle may be completely different than mine though so watch for pressure signs and work up carefully with any powder.

Cool video! I had more fun reading the jackassy comments lol. Nice shootin!!!!

Finally gave up on the Amax and went to the 69 smk. YAHTZEE! I was hoping to use the amax with its superior bc but what does it matter if I cant hit my target past 150yds. Finally settled on 30 gr. of varget at 3267 fps, .007 from touching. Longest lrf confirmed kill at 453 yds. on a ground squirrel. My rechambered savage barrel is a consisted .25 moa with this load.

I appreciate all the help guys. I'm now going to work with the 70 vld bergers over varget, 8208 and n-150. Just emailed berger and am waiting to see if they have a starting point for the 8208. I'll report any findings.

Have you tried the new kickass IMR 8208? This stuff is the shisnitz I know a benchrest shooter that has switched to it and is shooting 2s and 2inch groups at 600yds. My Encore 223 is a tack driver at 1to300yds with 69gr smk's.

Great info!

Thanks Guys.

I using 28.8 Varget, Wolf SRM primers, 80gr. Noslers.
groups range from .250 to .073 ay 100 yards.

Pac-Nor barrel, Savage Dual Port Action, Savage BR Stock.

Have also tried the a-max in a 22 BR with the same results. Good groups to you have to be kidding. You can throw all the different components you want at some lots of them and never get consistency. Switched to Berger 75Gr and consistency appeared as if by magic.
