.224 Ar mag

Not sure if this is the right section or not,

I am interested in the .224 Ar mag, It a necked down 6.5 Grendel to shoot the .224 cal bullets in an ar-15 rifle.

Ive got a lower Id like to do something with and would like something different than the regular .223.

Is anyone shooting this round in an AR? whats your thoughts on it? And, would you say its worth the expense verses the 6.5 grendel?

Thanks

Since I developed the cartridge only recently, we have not been making them that long so I don't know you will get much feedback on the cartridge yet.

We shortened the name to just the .224AR and we have a fair amount of info on the cartridge on the website at: http://www.6mmar.com/224_AR.html

It's a very accurate cartridge, and it functions and shoots very well out of AR-15's. Water capacity of the .224AR case is 36 gr of water weight vs about 29.5 gr for the .223 Rem. This extra capacity really "opens the door" for more options with the cartridge.

It's really a pleasure to shoot since it has so little recoil. Die sets are readily available and brass is easy to make. For long range work I have been liking the Berger 90 gr. BT bullets (not the VLD's). The 90 gr BT bullets have a B.C. around .527 (same as a 6mm Sierra 107) and with the case capacity of the cartridge it's easy to get them up to a good velocity with accuracy.

FWIW - There will be an article with more information on it in the January 2010 issue of Precision Shooting magazine.

Just for reference, attached is a picture of the AR-15 wildcats we chamber uppers in. On left is a .223 Rem for reference, next is a 20 Practical, next is a 20 Tactical, next is the .224AR, next is the 6mmAR, and on the right is the 6mmAR Turbo 40.

I have several of the uppers built by Robert and will tell you that they are worth the money! I do not have the 224AR though, mine are the 6mm versions. If we knew the intended purpose for your rifle we could be of more help.

I have to say that I like the near 6BR performance from Roberts uppers. Accuracy is great! You would not be disappointed in it!

Thanks for the replys,

Yes, Ive read up about all I could find about the round and your site too.

The main purpose of the rifle would be casual target shooting at 400 and 600yds. Im aslo thinking the primary bullets Id shoot would be either the 80gr SMK or Berger BT and possibly 80gr amax. Would a 7.5 twist barrel of 24" be sufficient? I might possibly shoot the 90gr SMK.

Like I said, Ive got a lower Id like to do something different with and am thinking this would be a nice round..

Robert, Could I specify a Brux 4 groove barrel?

Thanks, Jerid

If you are going to shoot 90's you really should run with a 1:7" twist. I have Brux barrels in stock (i.e. 1:6.95" or 1:7.6" twist, all 4 groove cut rifled barrels). If you are not going to run the 90's, anywhere in the 1:7.5 to 1:8" twist works great with the bullets up to 82 gr. I also have Krieger 1:7.7" or 1:8" twist barrels in stock, and if you really want to get into it, I have some Bartlein 5c cut rifled gain twist barrels that go from a 1:8 twist at the breech to 1:7" twist at the muzzle. All the good stuff!
