I am gearing up to do a 22-250AI build. I am wanting to shoot the 75gr a-max bullets for long range work, and i would also like to shoot 55gr v-max for prairie dog work. I really dont want to go with an 8 twist barrel as i am afraid that the speed of the 250Ai will spin or could spin the jackets off the lighter bullets. So I am thinking an 9 twist will do. I have heard both ways about 9 twist barrels and 75gr bullets. Some say it will shoot some say it will not. I am pretty sure it will be ok, but i thought i might ask here to see if i could get some first hand experience. Also what barrel do you think would work best to be sure that the 75's will shoot in the 9 twist. I am going to use either a Brux, cut rifle) or a shilen, button rifle) or do you think any of that really matters? Thanks man!! Lee

I have never worked with .22-250AI but can tell you that a 1/9 will not work in .223 and Hornady 75gr a-max bullets. I can get the standard Hornady 75 grain hpbt match bullets to work just fine. Because of the much higher velocities in .22-250AI you may be able to shoot them in a 1/9 twist. It would be a shame to spend all that money and not be able to shoot the bullets you planned for. Maybe someone with a similar rig to your plan will chime in.

My 9 twist Pac-Nor loves the 75 grain A-max over H-4350 and F210M's...
I have a 28 inch 1.250 9 twist Hart waiting in the wings for my 22/6.5x47 Lapua reamer to show up and that was built around the 75 grain A-max also.
It should be right up there with the 22/250 AI chambering with better brass life...

I built a 22-250AI last summer with a 9 twist Hart. I have less than 200 rounds through it but I would say the average 3 shot group is about .25' with the smallest at .083' and and the largest around .5' That's with 75 Amax's and H414.
