223 Wylde

Personally, I love it. I'm shooting an AR with White Oak Armament Varmint upper with 223 wylde chamber. Throat is just right for single loading 80/90gr SMKs. If you were to stick to lighter bullets, you might consider a standard .223 Rem chamber, vs. 5.56 which has a lot of throat. Competitive shooters use both, so they are both successful, the Wylde and 5.56 just leave a little more room for max loads, but you might find that your barrel might not like the max velocities anyway. My 20" barrel likes 2650-2690fps for a 77gr bullet, but again this is an AR.

Several are shooting the Wylde with bolt actions, most are 26" long and 7 twist.

They love them shooting Prairie Dogs and F/TR shooting.

I may try one out. Just looking for opinions.

My one gripe with the Wylde chamber is that it is designed for jack of all trades, master of none. It works great, and you can get a WIDE range of good shooting groups. I have good loads from 52gr up to 90gr in my Wylde and 1:7 twist.

.223 is hard enough in selecting the right twist, so I'd recommend you pick a bullet range first. With that you'll have a better idea of finished cartridge OAL, which can be anywhere from 2.200" to 2.550" depending on those bullets. Standard magazines are usually held to 2.260", but check your bolt gun to see. If you're looking for just varminting under 300 yards, the Wylde can give you a little more clearance for pressure, but the real difference is just in throat length, so that might not be what you want.

Love it, I have been using it now for about 13 years I guess. Of course, I may have it throated for any of the bullets that I may be using bigger than an 80 grainer.

Love it in an AR. NATO chamber for flawless function with a freebore/throat configuration that produces really tight groups. In a bolt action, I use a standard 223REM match since a generous chamber is not required for function.

Back at the beginning of this month there was a pre-fit .223 Wylde barrel for my Savage for sale on here. I past it up because I was unsure if it was legal to use in FTR. ::) Now I know better, oh well quess I'll buy new.

What's your opinion on the 223 Wylde?

Just looking for opinions.

Hard to quantify that - especially not knowing what the intended use is and whether it's something like a bolt gun or an AR-15.

As an "all around" AR-15 chamber that will swallow up anything and the kitchen sink - you cannot beat it. Decent for high power, throating is a little long for most varmint bullets in an AR-15 where you have a mag length limit.

For varminting using the 40-64 gr varmint bullets in an AR-15, I think the Compass Lake reamer design is better.

For a long range bolt gun where you are not limited in OAL and you are going to run larger bullets a longer throat is desirable (i.e. more than the Wylde chamer).

If you were a little more precise as to your intended use and what type of rifle it would be used with, the opinions given might be more helpful and directed toward that. If it's for prairie dogging in a bolt gun with a variety of possible bullets, it's certainly workable and a good "all around" type chambering.

I considered it, but went with a 223 Remington only, from Krieger, simply because I was only going to shoot short range, with light bullets and had no need for a big chamber. Especially because I wanted top accuracy was not willing to compromise that for the ability to swallow most any 223 or 5.56 bullet.
