.223 Wylde vs 5.56 NATO in AR

I am looking at budget ar uppers, it will get used mostly for plinking, practice and maybe an occasional varmint or two. I wont be shooting mainly 55. Grain varmint bullets. Is there an advantage to either chamber?

the Wylde is supposed to be cut a little more precisely than the Nato chamber. As I have read it is good for .223 commercial and 5.56 Nato without the attendant pressure problems. I have an 18" 1: 8 twist that likes 77's but will shoot lighter bullets fairly well also. Spend the money on a good barrel, if you are looking for accuracy you won't regret it. Jim

In your case I would look at quality of barrel over which chamber. With a 55gr I would think the Wylde would get you closer to the lands (correct me if I'm wrong) which generally could be considered to bring you better accuracy although that isn't really a rule or anything.

The barrel I have that shoots 55gr XM193 the best happens to be a 5.56 chamber, so who knows.

Id say buy the best quality barrel you can afford. Look at a Criterion, White Oak or something in that price range.

I run a wylde chamber in my 223 paddock rifle . Have a 1 -8 twist Swan barrel Australian made with a wylde chamber it always me to use long heavier projectiles. Can also use 55s up to 90 grn projies and always me to single load for using the 90s if the young bloke wants.to use it at the range

AMU teams have been using the Wylde chamber for the service match rifle
competitions for more then 30 years. The armorer's are always tweaking as
bullet profiles are changed and tested. Throats, freebores, and leads are never
a constant with these guy's. And note, the AMU's primarily shoot Sierra bullets
for the 5.56 service rifle competitions. Anybody ever get a chance to see these
teams shoot in competition, it's highly advised.
