223 Varmint Special

I have owned 3 or 4 of the Varmint Specials and I never noticed in difference in the throat length from other 700's in 223.

Remingtons tend to have pretty generous freebore. I have had several that had significant jump to reach the lands. Shoot it, see how it goes.

I agree with Snert. I don't think any Remington I have owned ever had nothing but a real generous freebore. Even with the excessive freebore they have always shot pretty good. If you reload the Sierras will shoot good as they have a great tolerance for the jump.

Thanks everyone. This one seems to be long even for a remington. The gun don't look like it's shot much, but I will shoot tomorrow and see how it shoots.

My first handload rifle was my 700 VS in 223 Rem. With a 40-gr BT or a 50-gr TNT, to touch the lands leaves very little neck engagement, a lot less than most folks would feel comfortable with. I can provide specifics. What bullets are you using?

The old Sierra #1365 55 gr Varminter loves lots of jump, is very accurate and frangible. Give it try.

Before the advent of the tipped bullet I was very successful with the Hornady 50 Sp, the Sierra 50 grain Blitz (not BK) and other "old school" bullets. The positive side? Cheap. The negative side? You have to click one or three more clicks on your scope....sigh.
